Conall: The 93rd Highlanders, Book Two Page 15

by Samantha Kane

“I’ve got to go,” he said to Alec, reluctant to let him go. “I can’t leave Hamish to Dougie.”

“That’s true enough,” Alec agreed. He started to pull his arm from around Brodie, but just then another man called out his name, hurrying to his side.

“Lieutenant Fletcher’s been shot,” he told Brodie without preamble. “Captain Munro sent me for you.”

Brodie’s stomach dropped to his knees and for a moment it was Alec holding him up.

“How bad?” Alec asked when Brodie had trouble speaking. Conall was his twin. He’d never imagined something might happen to one of them here. What a fool he’d been. What would he do without Connie?

“In the arm,” the man said dismissively. “A scratch really, but he’ll be going to Scutari. I wouldn’t wish that place on anyone.” He shuddered dramatically. “Say your goodbye’s now before the typhus gets him.”

Alec shoved the soldier with a hand on his shoulder. “Shut it,” he growled. “That’s the man’s brother.”

“Don’t I know it?” the soldier said, glaring. “Looks just like him, don’t he? It always gives me the shivers to see them together. It isn’t natural.”

“You’re an idiot,” Alec said flatly. “Who decided it would be a good idea to make you a messenger?”

“Fuck you,” the soldier said with a rude gesture. “I shouldn’t have bothered.”

Brodie still had no words. He was relieved, greatly so, to find out that both of his brothers would be alright. But the feeling paled in comparison to the soul-wrenching relief he’d felt when he’d seen Alec’s smile a few minutes ago. Brodie knew that from this day forward things were going to be different. He just wasn’t sure that was a good thing.

The bigger shock is the relief that consumes Brodie when he finds Alec alive and well. He realizes at that moment that what he feels for Alec goes beyond friendship. Both Brodie and Alec have been courting pretty Miss Victoria McMillan for months, competing for her affection. But what if they didn’t need to compete? What if Brodie could have it all: Tory McMillan and his best friend? Is he man enough to lure them both to his bed and keep them there?
