Chapter 1
As the smell of burnt rubber made its way through the air, circling around Sebastian - it reminded him that Lydia had just driven out of his life. He wanted to run out the door and follow her. There was something like dread tightened around him, making him worry about her safety. Would she be okay? However, as he took his first steps forward he bumped into Ivy, still standing there with a disappointed look on her face.
“Where do you think you’re going?” She said with venom in her voice.
“Get. Out.” Sebastian growled back, looking at her with a deathly stare. Ivy stood her ground, looking up at him in determination.
“Don’t forget your roots, Cronus. You are still a part of the Royal Family and whether you like it or not, you have obligations that you must fulfill.” Sebastian looked irate, his face turning red as his fists clenched with emotion. Ivy was getting on his nerves and if she didn’t move in the next second, he would regret his coming actions.
“I won’t repeat myself. Get out.” He stared her down, hoping she would get the message. Instead, she walked into the house as if she owned it, sitting down on the closest chair, crossing her legs and placing a hand on her knee, giving him a flirtatious look.
“Now why would you make me leave, when I am the only girl left who would be with you?” She got up once more and walked with a well-measured step, making her way toward him, unafraid despite the potential power that threatened to explode at her. She was playing with fire, a ticking time bomb, but to her, this was all some kind of game. “That puny human of yours, she will never want you now… she’ll go be with that Angel.” Ivy grinned as she saw his composure falter for a moment.
It was true. The thought of Lydia was raging in his mind. While at first his mission was purely for his own gain and amusement, there was now something else in play, an emotion he had never felt before. He didn’t know what it was, but at the same time, he felt a pang in his chest, telling him he needed Lydia in order to be happy again.
“Face it… she hates you.” Ivy uttered, whispering in his ear with an evil grin plastered on her face. She turned around, walking away with a whisk of her head. Sebastian stared at her for a moment, anger raging through his veins, making his blood boil. This couldn’t be happening. But if Ivy wanted to play dirty, he would destroy her from the inside out.
In a moment, he was by her side, grabbing her by the arm and whipping her around. His fingers dug into her flesh roughly, leaving bruises on her pale skin. She was about to retaliate and fight him when he pressed his lips to hers. She was surprised at first but then smiled into the kiss, thinking her spell had worked.
Ivy came from a long line of succubi and with a simple stare, her ancestors had made men fall to their knees, but what she didn’t know was that this particular prince of darkness was too powerful for her spell to control. The only person that could make him bend to their will was now the one who held his heart: Lydia.
But that didn’t mean Sebastian couldn’t play along and destroy Ivy for all the damage she had just done. He would sleep with her, make her addicted to his body, his moves, his touch, and then he would destroy her slowly, murdering her with a heartbreak she wouldn’t see coming.
As he plotted against the daughter of a very powerful demon, of the royal class, all thoughts of family obligations were far from his mind. As his hands moved up her shirt and groped her breasts roughly, he was thinking of how he would make her family crumble, for attempting to take away his free will.
With that, he pushed her into a wall, his body pressing into hers with a force that made her gasp out. Before she could wrap her arms around his neck, he pinned her hands over her head, growling at her before biting her lip. He tugged back a little, looking into her eyes, his own eyes dark and vengeful. Slowly, his lips traveled to her neck until he bit down, his teeth sinking into her causing thin lines of blood to flow down her neck. His tongue ran over her wound, licking it up, making her moan out.
She liked it rough and the more vulgar he was, the more she enjoyed it. In a flash, he cleared off a nearby coffee table, breaking the various valuables positioned there. Ivy moaned out as he pressed her against the table, and bent her over it. Suddenly he yanked her dark hair back as if he had the intention to rip it out of her skull. At this point, he had worked himself up into a bloodlust.
He could think of nothing else besides making her pay for what she had done. Soon their bodies were rocking in unison as he destroyed her slowly, making her scream for mercy, which he never granted.
Eventually, with half the mansion destroyed, they collapsed onto the bed together. Ivy seemed pleased, remembering how Sebastian had treated her, all the places where his tongue had been, and how he had made her red and raw in several places. He may be a spoiled prince who thought he was superior to every demon, and every law of their society but one thing was for sure: he was one hell of a time.
She smiled, about to roll over and look at him, when he rushed out of bed. He looked a little pale, escaping into the bathroom. Breaking out into a cold sweat, he became very sick, retching everything he had eaten for the day. Ivy got up, walking to the doorway with a sly smile on her lips.
“I guess the rumors are true,” she whispered.
“What?” He asked harshly, wiping his mouth on the back of his hand, trying to look superior and strong, despite his current situation.
“That falling in love with a human makes you weak, just as weak as mankind.”
Chapter 2
Lydia looked up at Aaron in disbelief. Had he really confessed his feelings for her, right when she was telling him about her situation with Sebastian? Was he trying to catch her on the rebound? But she couldn’t see Aaron doing something like that.
As she looked up at him, she could see in his eyes that he sincerely liked her. She sighed, emotions swirling around in her chest that she couldn’t quite understand. She felt dizzy like she was going to faint at any moment. And in fact, her legs did give out from under her. Luckily, Aaron caught her before her head hit the concrete.
He picked her up bridal style, carrying her inside, worry painted onto his face as he laid her down on the couch. He quickly left the room, to get her some water and medicine. “Here,” he whispered, putting the glass to her lips and then helping her with the pills. He kneeled beside her, waiting for her to recover.
She, however, fell into a deep sleep, overwhelmed by all that had happened and all the emotions she had gone through in the past day. Aaron kept watching over her, slowly holding her hand, feeling its coldness. He knew that she was in a state of distress. If only he had done a better job of protecting her, then the demon would have never laid his hands on her and she would have never gotten hurt.
He kept watching her for a while. Eventually, she woke up with him still b
y her side, ready to take care of her. However, as he got close to her she shied away, giving him an apologetic look. “Aaron… I can’t… not yet anyway.” She whispered, looking sad as she said the words. She didn’t want to break her best friend’s heart, but she also didn’t see herself having any other choice. If she didn’t cut the ties loose now, he would always try and be with her, until it drove him into an obsession.
“Lydia… why can’t you just give me a chance?’ He whispered, pleading with her, trying to hold her hands. She allowed him to take them. She looked down numbly as she felt him intertwining their fingers. It felt bittersweet to be holding hands like this. He looked up at her, hopeful that she would change her mind.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered once more, before leaning forward and kissing his lips for the first time. Aaron savored the kiss, wishing it would have lasted longer. He looked at her, his eyes hurt and wounded, watching her get up and leave, the door shutting behind her with a definitive thud as if she would never make her way over that threshold again.
With tears on both side of that door, their friendship was forever changed. With his emotions on the table, things would be different. Would Lydia ever love him or would he be forced to live a miserable existence, without her loving embrace to keep him going day by day? These questions plagued the angel, making him break down on his couch, anger slowly growing as he thought about the root cause of this: Sebastian.
But Sebastian was the prince of darkness, there was no way, he, a common guardian angel could defeat him in battle. As Aaron thought about this, he felt like a failure, someone incapable of protecting his charge from the worst of fates.
Lydia’s mind, on the other hand, was on neither angels nor demons. Instead, she found herself torn between the two men, trying to get her feelings in line. On one hand, she knew Aaron would be her best option. He would care for her and treat her like a princess, but there was something stopping her from wrapping her arms around him with anything other than friendly affection.
Plus, there was Sebastian, who made her feel like no one else could. There was something about his bad boy charm that made her body yearn for him, but as far as she could tell he wasn’t the man he had claimed to be. Instead, he had engagements with other women and had a modeling agency that was practically a porn site. What else was he hiding from her?
In her dismay, she had walked along the sidewalk, not knowing where she was going. As she looked up, she found herself in front of Victoria’s house. If there was anyone she could talk to, it would be her.
Numbly, Lydia forced her legs to move forward, until she knocked on the door. She prayed her friend was home. Victoria promptly opened the door, looking down at Lydia’s red-rimmed eyes. Frowning she wrapped her arms around her friend, instantly trying to comfort her, even if she had no idea what had happened.
When Lydia said nothing, she pulled her inside her small apartment complex. She sat the small girl down on the couch before she grabbed a glass of water and handed it to her. Lydia took it but didn’t drink.
Victoria’s usually loud and preppy personality was instantly mellowed out when she saw her friend in her current sorry state. “Lydia… what’s wrong?” She whispered sincerely, getting close to her.
“Can we lay down?” Lydia asked suddenly, looking up at her best friend. Victoria nodded and soon the two of them were cuddled up together in Victoria’s full sized bed. Lydia began to shake with sobs as she broke down, all her emotions getting the best of her. Victoria frowned, scooting closer, until she was cuddling against her best friend, gently rubbing her back, waiting for her to calm down from her sudden onset of tears.
“Babe. Tell me what happened.”
“Sebastian… he is engaged to another woman. Aaron… he loves me.” She whispered, numbly looking at her friend with a vacant stare. Victoria looked at her, frowning even more, before hugging her tightly.
“You can’t choose, can you?”
Slowly Lydia shook her head. “I know I should go for Aaron… but…”
“You love Sebastian.”
“No,” Lydia said, crossing her arms, assuming her naturally stubborn state. She didn’t love cheats.
Chapter 3
“You don’t have to lie to me. I am here for you.” Victoria leaned forward, gently kissing her friend’s forehead before her fingertips reached out and caressed her cheek for a moment. Lydia’s eyes were watery as she looked up at the gorgeous woman.
“I know… it’s just… I don’t know what to feel. I feel torn.” She whispered, not wanting to decide what side she wanted to be with.
“Well… do you know who Sebastian’s new girl is? Maybe we can get some dirt on him and make him regret ever letting you go!” Victoria suddenly chimed, getting back into her regular persona. Lydia contemplated the attempt at vengeance, biting her lip, before shaking her head. She couldn’t stoop down to his level.
“Oh c’mon. He had a fiancé and didn’t even tell you, he deserves to be exposed as the cheat that he is. You know that Lydia.” Victoria said, grabbing Lydia’s hands, squeezing them tightly in her own.
“I don’t know… Vic…” Lydia looked down, refusing to acknowledge the excitement in Victoria’s eyes. She didn’t know if she wanted to uncover his dark secrets. Some things were best left untouched after all.
“C’mon it’ll feel good.” Victoria gave her puppy dog eyes, pleading with her. Lydia sighed, knowing that in the end she would have no other choice, but to go along with Victoria’s little plan.
“Fine.”
***
“I don’t know about this…” Lydia said in a hushed whisper as they made their way into the elevator, the 13th button lit brightly, like some ominous sign.
“Don’t wuss out on me now, you barely even got here. Don’t you want to embarrass this douche?” Victoria’s voice was filled with excitement as she thought about sneaking around and spying on her boss. She was, of course, threatening the new job she had come to love, but at the same time, the desire to know the full truth about Sebastian Cronus gnawed at her.
“This way,” Victoria said, crouching down as if she was in some sort of a secret agent movie. Lydia slowly rolled eyes, following her with her hands in her pockets, assuming an uninterested stance. She was trying her best not to express any emotions. She didn’t want to shed another tear for the man who had brutally ripped out her heart, without even saying a word. Lydia couldn’t believe the two of them kissed without reserve, right in front of her.
As she thought about this, she ground her teeth, upset about the whole thing. She quickly shut her eyes, forcing the hot angry tears back inside of her. This was not the time to break down. As she opened them again, she saw Victoria already at the door to Sebastian’s office. Lydia quickly walked forward, standing near the door as well.
They peaked their heads inside, seeing Sebastian working at his desk. On his desk, however, was everything but work. Instead, Ivy was sitting there, her mini skirt riding up her plump thighs.
“Why don’t you stop working so we can have a little fun?” Ivy whispered, leaning forward, her lips getting dangerously close to Sebastian. He growled at her, pushing her away from him, not wanting her attention. He wanted nothing to do with her, after their first night together. Just the thought of being with her made him sick to the stomach.
“Don’t be like that.” She hissed, getting off the desk and moving up to him, trying to make him succumb to her whims. But like the many times in the past, her magic was useless against his. His bloodline was too powerful for her spells to have any effect. She frowned as she went for another method. She grabbed him, forcing him against the nearby wall, as she pressed her lips to him.
In an instant, he reacted, flipping them over and slamming her into the wall. His mouth came close to her ear. “Get out, before I make you regret your entire existence.” His voice was harsh and his words dripped with venom as his fingers dug into her skin.
Lydia, from the doorway, could not hear his words. I
nstead, all she saw was their ambiguous position. From what she could tell, it looked like he was making out with her, his body pressed against hers. She was angry, wanting to go into his office and expose him for the liar that he was, but instead she was frozen in place, unable to look away.
Victoria looked at her friend and reached over, touching her. This broke Lydia out of her trance. In a flurry she ran away, heading for the nearest bathroom, wanting to be alone. As she ran off, Sebastian sensed someone at the door, seeing her chestnut hair disappear in a blur. It was her.
His heart pounded in his chest as he pushed Ivy to the side, letting her collapse on the sofa nearby. With a heavy step, he made his way out of his office, determined to find the human. She was no longer simply a human to him however, she was something more. She was someone that he needed in his life.
With determination, he spotted Victoria’s bright red hair down the hall, running at a quick pace. He followed her, thinking the redhead would bring him to Lydia.
Meanwhile, Lydia, finally made her way to the bathroom, locking herself in one of the stalls. She broke down, tears streaming down her face as she thought about everything she had just seen. Did the time she spent with Sebastian mean nothing to him? Her emotions were threatening to explode out of her and as she crumbled up a wad of tissues in her hand, she felt like never coming out of the bathroom stall. She just wanted to curl up and disappear into a world without heartbreak and pain.
Chapter 4
Sebastian burst through the door of the women’s bathroom. His eyes locked with Victoria’s. “Get out!” She yelled, trying to defend her friend as she pointed with a shaky hand at the door. She knew this would probably get her fired, but right now Lydia was more important. She wouldn’t let this man get near her friend if it was the last thing she did.
