Vin went into town to grab some alcohol and food. Being here alone is nice and I need the space. I get up off the beach and head back to the cabin. I haven’t run in awhile and suddenly the urge is overwhelming. The twists and turns of the dirt roads are quiet and solidary and call out for my pounding foot steps. That’s that, I’m going for a run. I throw on a pair of shorts over my red bikini and head out to the road.
About fifteen minutes into the run I hear a car approach me from behind and slow down to match my pace. I look up from the road and see a blacked-out sedan. Interesting. The rear window rolls down and Carm’s face appears. There should be a reaction to this I know but I have nothing.
“We need to talk, Ember.”
“About?”
“Can you get in the car? It’ll be easier. We can even park on the side. I won’t take you anywhere.”
“You think I’m afraid of you?” I stop running and stare him down. “I will never let that happen to me again. I would kill you without a second thought.”
“I know.” He nods. “Please?”
I open the rear door and climb in. There are two men in the front as well. I can see the face of the driver in the rear-view mirror and commit it to memory. The passenger I can’t see since he is facing the window, but I do take in his dark brown hair with rich mahogany highlights, not unlike my own. His shoulders are wide set and he looks to be tall.
“You killed our father.” Carm says.
“Yes.” I answer.
“I am now head of the Eastside Rampage.”
“Congrats.”
“Yeah.” He runs his hand over his face. “You’re my only sister Ember, I’m not going to leave you alone.”
“You’re going to regret that when you’re dead.”
The guy in the front passenger seat snorts and I see his shoulders moving slightly. Is he laughing?
“What’s so fucking funny?” I ask him.
He turns his face to look at me, all of a sudden I feel lightheaded and my body feels like I’ve been coated in ice. Light turquoise eyes and a beauty mark under the right stares back at me.
“Hello twin.”

Through the Pain
I'm different.
There's a darkness that stirs restless in my soul. It craves blood and violence then feeds off my anger and despair.
I can control it... most of the time.
I can starve it, but I cannot starve myself.
Because it's not just the darkness that craves these things... I do too.
My mother grounded me and helped calm the storm,
now she's dead and everything's changed.
I live my life through red hued glasses and anger always simmers just under the surface.
Until him...
Now my dark soul craves his and I won't let anything come between us, even if I have to kill... with my bare hands.
