The Big D Page 20

  “I’ll go get them.”

When Grant leaves the room, I decide to give her a pep talk. “Mommy doesn’t have much family, but daddy has plenty for the both of us. They can be a little crazy and smother you with love. But you’ll learn how lucky you are when you’re older. I promise.”

The door opens and Vicki and Cally come barreling through the door crying.

“Where’s my god baby?” Cally cries.

“She’s right here and very excited to meet all of you.”

They stop a few feet away from the bed and stare at her. “You can come closer, I promise she won’t bite. She doesn’t have teeth.” I laugh.

“She’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.” At this point the whole gangs filed into the room. They’re all hovered around the bed staring at the baby.

Grant joins my side and places his hand on my shoulder. “Okay, I want you all to meet…” He looks down at the floor then back up to his family with tears in his eyes. “I want you to meet Rylan Cally Donovan.”

There’s a few gasps once he says the name and a whole bunch of tears. A nurse walks in the room, sees the commotion and excuses herself right back out.

“I can’t believe…” Vicki covers her mouth with her hand. “It’s perfect.” She walks over and Grant gently grabs the baby and hands her off.

“She kind of looks like him, don’t you think?” She asks hopeful.

“That’s the first thing I said to Grant.”

The baby gets passed around and more tears are shed. After about an hour Grant kicks everyone out knowing I need some rest. I haven’t slept in over a day and I’m wiped out.

Grant brings the baby to me and lets me kiss her head before he puts her in her crib. Once she’s down he walks back and jumps in bed next to me. He kisses my forehead and I snuggle closer to him. “Get some rest baby. I’ve got our girl.”

  EPILOGUE

“Rylan, get over here please.” I watch my daughter dance in the grass with a giant smile on her face.

“I’m showing Uncle Ry what I learned in dance class mama.” She twirls and does an awkward leap that has me laughing.

I get on my knees in front of her and pull her to me. “You know, I bet he’s looking down on us right now watching. I know he loves your dance sweetheart.”

She looks at me skeptically like four-year olds do. “Up in heaven, right?”

  “Yes baby.”

“Rylan, come here for a second. Let me tell you a story of your Uncle Ry.”

Grant takes her to a nearby bench and continues the tradition. Every year since our Rylan was born, we visit her uncles grave site and Grant makes sure to tell her a story about him. It’s usually a funny story, I’m sure he’s saving the more serious ones for when she’s a little older.

I walk up to the tombstone and place my hand on top. “Oh Ry, you’d love her. She’s just like you.” I promised myself I wouldn’t cry this year but that isn’t a possibility. But now instead of sadness I remember all the good times and smile.

When I’m done I walk back to my family and wait for Grant to be done. He’s talking a lot with his hands so I know it’s a whopper of a story. I take a seat on the bench next to them and place my head on his shoulder.

“That was a funny story daddy. Uncle Trevor really had lipstick on?” She giggles.

“He did princess.” Grant laughs. “What do you girls say we go get some ice cream before stopping at home.”

“Yes! Can we please go mama?” She starts bouncing on the bench and looks at me hopefully.

“Of course baby, mama’s eating for two now.”

Grant’s head whips to me and his eyes are as wide as I’ve ever seen them.

  “What… Aggie…” He growls.

“Surprise! I figured this would be a great place to tell you since we can tell Ry too.”

He leans over and locks his lips on mine. “I love you Agnes Donovan.”

“And I love you Grant Donovan. Are you ready for another one?”

  He blocks Rylan’s ears. “Abso-fucking-lutely.”
