The guys were all leaning on the tops of their cubes now. Kellan picked up the navy-blue baseball cap with Get a CLEU stitched in gold lettering on the front. He turned it over, and she saw that Coop, Danny, Kellan, and even Lieutenant Bryan had signed the beige underside of the bill.
“Investigator Nichols, since your probation is over, it’s my duty to welcome you officially to the team.”
He jammed the cap on her hair and she smelled sulphur a split second before someone—Coop, she thought—tossed a string of firecrackers in her trash can, where they exploded in amplified abandon amid the whooping and applause of her team.
Kellan grabbed her and kissed her soundly, right there in front of everyone. But when he spoke, it was for her ears alone.
“And to the rest of my life,” he said softly. “If you want it. It’s up to you. Just as long as you know I love you.”
She grabbed the cap to keep it from falling off and smiled up into his eyes. “Did I ever have a choice?”
Which—this time—wasn’t such a bad thing.
