“Hello, Daddy.” Sherry’s sarcastic, acid-dripped greeting told Jack how this meeting was going to go.

“I guess Sam was right that I needed to see you.”

“Sammy needs to mind his own business,” Sherry answered bitterly and started shutting the door.

Jack raised his hand and stopped the door from shutting. Gently but firmly he opened it further, stepping into the apartment.

“How far are you along?” Jack needed to get right to the point so he could figure out what to do.

“About seven months or so,” Sherry answered. The conversation was strained. Tension filled the room.

Jack quickly did a few calculations and came up with around the time, maybe a little more, of that drunken night. That was if what Sherry was saying was the truth. “You look a lot bigger than seven months. It doesn’t make sense. I noticed you had gained some weight, but you didn’t look pregnant last month, Sherry.”

“It’s called spandex, Jack. You wear it under your clothes and it holds everything in. Besides it wasn’t until the last month that it started to get out of control.” Sherry started walking out of the room. It was typical Sherry to walk away when things got tense. Jack also noticed that she referred to the pregnancy as an “it.” She was avoiding anything she didn’t like, as usual.

“Is it mine?” Jack had to know.

Sherry was in his face as quickly as her bloated body could manage. Eyes bright with angry tears, swollen face red, the bitter threats that followed had Jack taking a step back. “Oh, this is your baby all right, Jacky. Make no mistake about it. And you are going to step up to the plate, Daddy. You will ditch the boy toy and marry me. Or I promise you, you will never see this baby again.”

Jack had never taken Sherry’s temper tantrums before and would not take them now. Firmly holding her by the shoulders, he made sure he had her complete attention. “The first thing I want to know is when your next doctor’s appointment is. I will go with you to that and we can make arrangements to have a test on paternity. If it can’t be done now we will wait until the baby is born. That is the first thing we are going to do.”

Sherry shrugged her shoulders, loosening his hands. Pointing her finger, she yelled, “Don’t you start ordering me around, Jack. I told you what is going to happen.”

“No, it’s not.” Jack’s own voice was starting to rise. “I used condoms when we were together. So first we see if the baby’s mine and then we’ll make plans. But make no mistake of the word ‘we’ in this situation. We both will be in this child’s life, but separately. We are not together as a couple now and never will be. Now when is your next doctor’s appointment?”

Sherry backed down under Jack’s anger and looked about ready to cry. Jack would have felt sorry at the lost look but he was feeling pretty raw at her manipulations and mixed signals.

In a small voice she replied, “There isn’t any doctor’s appointment. I haven’t seen a doctor.”

Jack had thought Sherry couldn’t have shocked him more when she had opened the door. But the tendrils of ice creeping up his spine at this revelation froze him in place. The medical part of his brain ran through all the questions. Was she taking prenatal vitamins? What about her blood pressure and baby’s heartbeat check? Shit, had she been drinking or using drugs in the early months with all of her partying?

“You did not just say you haven’t seen a doctor.” Jack couldn’t believe how deadly calm his voice was.

“Jack, you have to understand,” Sherry pleaded. Jack’s face was like thunder and she was starting to get scared. “At first I was in denial. If I hid the weight gain and went on as before, it wasn’t real. Then in the last month I couldn’t hide it anymore and you wouldn’t answer my texts or calls. But I knew eventually you would want to be with me again. I just had to be patient. After we got back together I figured we could then decide what we were going to do about the baby and go back to having fun again, just like before.”

Jack just blinked at what she had just said. In his mind he started making plans for the child. It was becoming very obvious Sherry wasn’t thinking clearly or was so self-absorbed in what she wanted that she couldn’t see reality. Either way it really didn’t matter. Jack was going to have to be the one taking care of this baby.

Pulling out his cell phone, he called the hospital and got in touch with a friend who was an obstetrician. He set up an appointment for Sherry and the baby in the morning of the next day. Sherry was sitting on the sofa, glaring at him as he took over, but he didn’t care. This was about a child who hadn’t asked to be brought into this drama.

Ending the call he said, “I’ll pick you up around nine in the morning. Be ready.”

“I’ll follow you in my own car. No. Don’t even try to object, I will be taking my own car. But you had better start thinking about when we’re getting married, Jack,” Sherry ordered.

  “Sherry, I told you—”

“Don’t say another word, Jack. Look at me. Look at my ankles. I’m fat and it’s your fault. You better hope when this is all over that my body doesn’t have horrible scars because of this.” Sherry’s voice had risen to a shriek. “Get out. Get out now!”

Jack could do nothing at that point but leave. It was becoming very clear that he was going to have to call his lawyer. He would never consent to marrying Sherry. He was not giving up Brian. And he was going to have full custody of his child. With a wounded heart, sick at the turn of events, Jack went to find his best friend who had always been like a rock, a solid in his life. Then he would have to face his love, suddenly ashamed of his behavior in the past.

Cade’s office door opened to an ashen-faced Jack walking in and sitting in the chair across from his desk. Jack didn’t say a word. He just stared down at the wood grains of the surface of his desk. As was Cade’s way, he sat back and waited, knowing that when Jack was ready he would start talking and they would deal with whatever had happened. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Bret’s blond head peek in, take one look at Jack, and pop out again. Five minutes later, Jack started talking.

Bret didn’t know what was going on. Jack was in Cade’s office and he looked really bad. Brian wasn’t with him and that in and of itself was weird. Those two were never apart. He could hear the murmur of a conversation but couldn’t make out any words. It had been almost a half hour and he was contemplating listening by the door when his cell phone rang. Looking at the screen, he saw it was Brian and quickly answered it.

Brian’s panicked voice shrieked in his ear. “Bret, I need your help. Jack went to see Sherry and he dropped me off at the store and that was an hour ago and he won’t answer the phone. I’m stranded with all these groceries.” There was the sound of a deep breath being taken. “Bret, what if she killed him? What if he’s hurt? What am I going to do?”

“Calm down. Jack is here talking to Cade. I’ll come pick you up. It’ll just be a few minutes. Take another deep breath and I’ll be right there,” Bret assured him.

Now Bret had the problem of Cade. He just couldn’t leave without telling him. But he didn’t want to interrupt what sounded like a very intense conversation. So, he settled for texting his bear to let him know what he was doing. That was still technically within the boundaries of their agreement of Cade knowing where he was at all times. By the time he left, he could hear Cade and Jack on the speaker phone, talking to someone. He had just reached his car when he received a text back telling him to take Brian home to Jack’s house and wait with him until he heard back from Cade.

Brian was in a panic. He knew whatever Jack had to do with Sherry, it wasn’t going to be good. After Jack had dropped him off, he had gone down the aisles of the grocery store, just knowing Sherry was doing something to get Jack back. Further into the store Brian decided, after seeing her again, Jack would realize he wanted a woman as a partner, instead of a man. At that point he had to stop and calm his breathing, before he started to hyperventilate. Finally, as he was checking out the groceries, Brian remembere
d how close they had become in the last few weeks. Especially Jack’s words of love, right before he had left him at the grocery store.

Brain had pushed the cart full food out the sliding doors of the store, expecting to see Jack waiting for him. He knew they would talk about what was going on with Sherry, and then they could continue their life together.

Instead, there was no sign of Jack in the parking lot. He waited and waited, but Jack didn’t show up.

He tried Jack’s cell a couple of times only to go straight to voice mail. Finally he called Bret. Bret had said that Jack was at their house talking to Cade. Somehow that didn’t bode well for Brian. Never in a million years would Brian think Jack could forget about him and leave him stranded.

Bret arrived to find Brian frantically pacing in front of the grocery store. Between the both of them, they had the bags of food in the car and were on the way to Jack’s house. Over and over Brian kept saying, “I can’t believe he forgot me.”

Bret stepped on the gas, knowing he had to get Brian home before the poor man started crying.

Jack left Cade’s house feeling a little better after discussing his rights concerning the baby with Cade’s lawyer. The plans were already being set in motion. If it came to that point, they were going to legally force Sherry to physically take care of herself for the baby’s sake. The paperwork was already being drawn up for the paternity tests. If he was the father, legal papers would be filed for him to have full custody. Jack felt for the first time in the last three hours that he could breathe again. Then he realized that he had left Brian stranded at the grocery store. Grabbing his cell phone where it laid on the seat, he saw he had multiple missed calls. The last call was from Bret. Listening to that one first told him Bret had picked up Brian and they were both at his house. Putting the phone back down on the seat, Jack drove home trying to figure out how he was going to explain everything to Brian and somehow keep the man from leaving him.

When Jack walked in the door, Brian couldn’t stop from propelling himself into the man’s arms. With his legs wrapped tight around Jack’s waist and a stranglehold around his neck, Brian wasn’t planning on letting Jack go soon. Brian was so happy he was okay he just couldn’t stop kissing him. From far away, he heard Bret say he was leaving and the closing of the door. Breathing became a necessity, forcing him to break the kiss and ask, “Are you okay?”

Jack couldn’t believe the little man. He had left him stranded for hours. He hadn’t answered his calls or even let him know where he was. And the first thing Brian did was love on him and ask him if he was okay. It just sucked that his next words were going to hurt the small man even more, “I love you. I’m sorry about this afternoon. I am so sorry for what I’m about to say.”

Brian felt his heart break. Letting go of Jack’s neck and sliding his legs down, he walked to the other side of the living room and put the sofa between them. Somehow Sherry had managed to convince Jack to take her back. And Brian was out in the cold. Squaring his shoulders and lifting his chin, he bravely stated, “You’re going to have to give me a few days to find somewhere else to live and get my stuff out.”

Jack was across the room, sailing over the couch in one leap and sweeping Brian up in his arms. With purposeful strides he soon was sitting on the bed with his man on his lap. After a short struggle that ended with Jack lying on top of Brian holding his hands above his head, Jack figured the painful conversation could finally begin.

“All right, love, and you are my love. I hate like hell that what I am going to say is going to hurt you. But know that as far as I am concerned nothing can or will come between us.” Jack leaned down and gave Brian a quick kiss. “I went over to Sherry’s and found out she is pregnant.”

Brian couldn’t hold back his gasp of shock. Never in a million years had he expected this. “What are you going to do?” He had to know.

“I am going to do everything I can to ensure that baby is taken care of, whether it is mine or not. Sherry hasn’t been taking care of herself as a pregnant woman should. I was just at Cade’s and we had a meeting with his lawyer. I am taking steps to make sure the baby is safe. Tomorrow I will be going to a doctor’s appointment with Sherry to see how everything is, health wise.” Jack took a deep breath. “Sherry was in denial about the pregnancy. And when she couldn’t deny it anymore, she decided I am going to marry her. I told her that wasn’t happening. She was pretty upset when I left her apartment and I had to call her brother Sam to go over there.”

“How far along is she, Jack?” Brian was trying to wrap his head around the idea of a baby. It sounded like Jack wanted to keep the baby but not Sherry. Where did that leave him?

“She says she’s around seven months along, sweetheart. But I have to tell you, I would have said by looking at her she was overdue, she is so big.” Jack knew that he had given Brian a huge shock. Hell, he was still in shock. He also knew there were a lot more questions to be answered. But right now he desperately needed to connect with his sweetheart in the most basic way.

Flipping Brian over, Jack pulled off his shoes, pants, and underwear. Yanking the tee shirt off over his own head, he started giving Brian sucking kisses all over his back. Pulling away for a moment, he quickly chucked his own shoes and then the rest of his clothes.

One minute Brian was trying to be supportive, pushing aside his own hurt, and the next minute he was lying on his stomach naked. Before he knew it, Jack had his ass cheeks pried apart and was licking his asshole. No one had ever done that to him before and the sensations that tongue was creating had him flying. Brian let out a moan when Jack stiffened his tongue and began stabbing it into him. He couldn’t stop rocking his hips back and forth and rubbing his cock on the bed covers. His moaning became louder when a finger slid alongside the tongue, opening him up.

“Please Jack, harder. Jack, more. I’ll do anything you want.” Brian’s babbling turned to whimpers. There were three fingers inside him now and those fingers were pegging that spot making him lose his mind. Jacks tongue was still licking him, moving over his sack and back to his hole. Brian dropped his shoulders to the bed. He knew he must look like a slut but he didn’t care. This was his Jack.

Jack pulled his fingers out and grabbed the lube. As he coated his cock, he took a moment to admire the sight before him. Brian was leaning on the bed with his shoulders, ass in the air. He had his ass cheeks pried apart, holding them open for his pleasure. Jack’s rock hard cock led the way as it pushed into that tight opening, forcing it to let him in. Jack had never seen a more beautiful sight than his cock sliding in and then pulling out of that straining hole. Bending forward, he wrapped an arm around Brian’s chest. Leaning back onto his knees, he pulled Brian upright, spreading him on his thighs.

“Give me your lips, sweet,” he ordered.

As their lips met, he took Brian’s slender shaft in his other hand and began pumping it to the rhythm of his cock powering into Brian’s ass. The begging and the whimpers Brian was making against his lips had the animal coming out of Jack. Pushing Brian back down onto the bed, he grabbed his hips, lifting them, and began thrusting fast into that tight channel. He had to stop when the muscles tightened into a stranglehold around his cock and Brian began shuddering and writhing under him as he came. Jack’s cum shot out and he started pistoning his hips in and out, using the warm cum as more lubricant through his own orgasm. Collapsing to the side, he pulled his love into his arms, trying to catch his breath.

Brian turned over, freeing them, and looked into those grass-green eyes, trying to find answers.

Jack opened his mouth and said, “I don’t have a ring to give you yet, love. But will you stand by my side, through thick and thin? Be my love, my partner and have only me and no one else, as I will for you?” And with those questions, Brian had his answers.

“Yes,” he replied. Jack shifted over on top of him and proceeded to make the sweetest love, sealing their promises to each other.

  Chapter Seven

  The next m
orning started with Jack waking up to an orgasm. He could honestly say he had never in his entire life been jarred awake to his cum being pulled from his cock by the sweet pouty lips of his lover. Leaning down, he grabbed hold of Brian’s hips and swung his bottom half up so the man was straddling his head. Taking that dripping prick into his mouth, he sucked and deep throated that lean shaft until cum filled his mouth. When there wasn’t any more to take, he shifted Brian’s top half back up, bare chest to chest, and then rolled him over until Brian was on the bottom. Bringing their lips together, he shared the bounty he had taken from his lover with his lover.

Knowing the day wouldn’t wait, he broke the kiss and whispered, “We have to get up. I have to leave soon.”

“Can I go with you?” Brian asked. He didn’t really want to deal with Sherry, but he would do anything for Jack.

“No. This time I have to find out where Sherry’s head is at. I’m hoping, the doctor can tell me medically what is happening with this baby.” Jack looked straight into Brian’s eyes, making sure he understood where Jack stood on this. “This is the last time it will be just me alone. After this, if you are willing, you will be included in everything in my life.”

“Okay.” This time Brian reached up for a kiss.

With a heavy heart, Jack made his way to the hospital wing that housed the doctors’ practices. He hoped that Sherry wasn’t going to pull a no show, because it wouldn’t be a pretty situation if he had to go get her. Part of him was relieved when he walked into the doctor’s office and there she sat. The other part dreaded dealing with her. One look at her face revealed she wasn’t happy and he braced himself for the drama.
