“Is this you trying to recreate the magic of a first date,” she teased him.
“Of course,” he replied and laughed. “I thought you would appreciate my romantic gesture.”
“Yeah, look where it got us the last time you brought me here,” Gloria went on as she placed a hand on her belly.
“It got us just where I want to be,” Mark said. “Or almost where I want to be.”
“What?” Gloria asked, but didn’t get an answer.
“Come on, we better get on board before they leave without us,” Mark said.
They showed their tickets to the man at the bottom of the gangplank then made their way on board to find a table. It was only when they were sitting down that Gloria questioned him.
“What did you mean when you said you were almost where you want to be?”
He reached in his pocket to bring out a folded piece of paper and held it out.
“What is it?” she asked as she reached to take it.
“Read it for yourself,” he replied.
She unfolded the paper to flatten it out on the table and saw the words written at the top. After reading a couple of lines, it was obvious what it was.
“The divorce came through already?” she said when she looked up.
“Karen signed the papers and everything is now settled,” he told her and laughed. “I’m young, free and eligible again.”
“You should definitely go wild,” Gloria joked.
“Well, I’m not that young,” he shot back. “And going wild is not what I want to do.”
“Gloria Godfrey,” she suddenly let out quietly when she remembered the name the flower delivery man gave.
“That was your first clue,” he said and smirked.
“What’s the second?” she asked as she stared across the table at him.
Mark reached in his pocket again and her heart flipped when she saw the small box he brought out.
“You’re crazy,” she let out. “You just got your divorce papers today.”
“I rushed them through to get me here,” he said. “I told you I was almost where I wanted to be. It’s up to you if I get there.” He flipped open the box and Gloria saw the gold band she was expecting.
“Will you marry me Gloria Thompson?”
“Yes,” she answered immediately as tears pricked at the corners of her eyes.
Mark dropped to his knees at the side of the table as he got the ring from the box and slipped it on her finger. He then dragged her to her feet and hugged her tightly.
“We’re going to be the happiest family in New Orleans” he told her before his lips found hers.
“I can’t believe ….” Gloria tried to say afterwards, but stumbled over her words. “It’s so …, so ….”
She remembered the hope she told Dr. Alexander that she would be happily married and in love when she was pregnant and it was coming true for her.
“I should have told you,” he went on with a glint in his eye. “On the other side of those divorce papers is a prenuptial agreement I need you to sign.”
“Shut up,” Gloria said and laughed as they hugged again. “I’m not after your money.”
“I know,” Mark said and smiled. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” Gloria replied and the happiness swept over her as their lips met again.
