Cones hobbled forward, with every step he could feel his life draining away. His hand shook, he could barely hold his gun.
Without warning more gunfire spewed from another tunnel as Russian troops poured into the cavern. The six black figures held up their arms and a strange humming sound filled the air.
‘It’s now or never Professor!’ Cones gasped dropping to his knees.
Frederick sprinted towards the monolith and spotted that the first amulet had been placed in a slot at its base four other slots were present. The humming intensified and one by one the cloaked figures began to vanish in a red haze. Quickly Frederick placed the amulets in the slots and stepped back looking at the top of the monolith. He felt despair as the black vapour continued to pour out of the top of the monolith. ‘Without the key all is lost.’
‘They key has always been with you.’ In his mind’s eye Frederick could hear the voice of the knight.
Frederick suddenly realised what he meant. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the vial Janus had given him weeks earlier. The liquid swirled inside. Frederick took a deep breath and flung the vial against the side of the monolith. For a few seconds nothing happened. Then the room began to shake and the black vapour at the top of the monolith began to change colour. Lightning forked out in all directions as the cavern shook.
Only one of the cloaked figures remained. It stepped forward and removed its cloak.
Frederick recoiled staring at the creature. Its eyes were large and looked as if it had scales as skin similar to a chameleon. ‘You have just delayed the inevitable, we will take this world.’ Then in a red haze the creature vanished.
Frederick suddenly found himself surrounded by Russian soldiers.
‘Professor Frederick, you have a knack of turning up in the most unlikely places.’
‘I could say the same for you.’ Frederick replied. ‘Should I be thanking you?’
Doctor Anna Vilenko stared back. ‘I’m afraid not.’
A man stepped forward and Frederick felt a needle penetrate his neck. Within a few seconds the cavern seemed to spin and Frederick dropped like a stone.
One of the soldiers walked over to Cones who was lay face down. He rolled the American over onto his back. ‘What about this one?’
Anna looked down at Cones. ‘Leave him, he’s as good as dead.’
Frederick’s limp body was carried out of the cavern.
