  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

There are so many amazing people to thank for this book it’s difficult to know where to start, so I’ll start at the beginning. A big hurrah to Giovanna Casotto for her gloriously sexy cover and interior art, and a massive thank you to Enrico Salvini for arranging it all. And a big thanks to Torren Smith and Kim Thompson for arranging the US cover graphics.

My undying gratitude to Alan Moore for his insightful foreword — you really were the cherry on top, and I’m honoured to have you steering at the helm, as you were a major influence on this book.

As ever, this book wouldn’t have been possible without the assistance of Gene Kannenberg, Jr., who stoically took my demands for more depraved filth on the chin (as it were). Gene’s picture research, scanning, fact-checking and knowledge elevated the book to something we can both be simultaneously ashamed and proud of! Thanks, buddy.

There were so many other people to thank on this mammoth task, so, in no particular order: Lynn Paula Russell, Carol Pinkus at Marvel, Rich Larson and Steve Fastner, Melinda Gebbie, Eric Reynolds at Fantagraphics, Kim Thompson and Paul Baresh for all the Eros Comix images and permissions. Toren Smith for the Japanese advice, Howard Jurofsky at Heavy Metal, William Vu at National Lampoon, Terry Natier at NBM, Steve Robson at Fanfare, Sal Quartuccio at SQP, Denis Kitchen, Charles Brownstein at the Comic Book Legal Defence Fund and Chris Staros at Top Shelf, Milo Manara, Vittorio Giardino, Durk Dehner and Sharon at the Tom of Finland Foundation, Nick Bertozzi, Tony Bennett at Knockabout and Hunt Emerson, John A Short and Neil Aldis at Men Only for Brit Starr permissions. Andreas C. Knigge and Ralf König, John Freeman, Nick Abadzis, Donna Barr, Roberta Gregory, Joe Phillips and Ron McFee, Winston Leyland at Leyland Publications, Steve MacIsaac, Scott Lewis, Jason Atomic, Barry Blair and Colin Warbridge, Howard Chaykin, Harris Miller, Bryan Talbot, Patrick Fillion, Kev O’Neill, Dave Gibbons, Oliver Frey, Phil Foglio, Frank Cho, Spain Rodriguez, Scott Dunbier, David Shenton, Stan Shaw, John Higgins, Garry Leach, Fredrik Strömberg, Junko Mizuno, Gengoroh Tagame, Mike and Cassandra Conroy, Jess Fink, Simon Bisley, Thierry Plée at Tabou Editions, Robert Triptow, Tanino Liberatore, Jacques Boivin, Craig McDonald at Verotik, Larry Welz, John Maybury, Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Conner, Paul Mounts, Mal Coney and Sean Doran, Ron Hussey, Steve Emond, Phil Jimenez, Craig Hamilton, Tim Vigil, Jordi Bernet and Manuel Auad at Auad Publishing, and all the other countless artists, creators, and publishers who took time out to talk to me, correct my mistakes, offer encouragement, and give permission to reprint your wonderful work. Particular thanks to Garth Ennis for always being a trooper and a good friend.

To my old housemate Will Morgan at 30th Century Comics, London for the loan of key gay comix, and a massive cheers to Howard Cruse for the amazing art, fact-checking, and support.

Bill Storie, Stephanie Johnson, and Mike Rhode for last minute scanning duties.

Thank you to Joseph Melchior for the loan of his Dave Stevens originals and for being a true mate, and to John Bamber for smoothing the way with so many people.

A big thanks to Adam, Julie, and Emily for putting up with my constant arguments and prima donna ways, and to Katie Greenwood, Tamsan Barratt, and Sean Wilson for their efficient and diligent additional picture and permissions research.

To Eric Himmel, Eric Klopfer, and Charlie Kochman at Abrams for their unwavering support and friendship. Huge apologies to anyone I’ve missed out.

This book has caused more hurt and pain that I could have ever expected and to those of you who were embarrassed, enraged, dismayed, or offended by this book then I am truly sorry. It was never my intention to cause any distress to anyone, but merely to record an unwritten history of a subgenre of comics. It appears that they are still a very potent source of controversy and animosity.

While writing this book we lost three comic book greats, my old friend Steve Whitaker, Will Elder and Dave Stevens. Steve was a sensational artist, raconteur, colorist on V for Vendetta and New Adventures of Hitler, and big-hearted man who taught me so much. I miss him. I have been an admirer of The Rocketeer creator Dave Stevens’s fantastic work since the late eighties. I was kindly granted permission to reprint Will Elder’s work in Erotic Comics volume one, not long before he passed away. The world will be a lot poorer without their creative geniuses.

This illustration, Tag Dis, was created for a hip-hop magazine by Vaughn Bode’s son Mark, who has carried on his father’s tradition of erotic comics, as well as becoming a tattooist and designer.
