Shifter's Moon: A Celia Winters Novel Book 3 Page 12

by Harrison, D. L.

Time was up, the last view flashed and she saw the main pack entering the field. It would be close… a moment later she heard growls from ahead as they scented magic, and witches, and one tiger shifter. She dug deep and felt a calm acceptance. She had no doubts here, not in battle. She was a predator, and a bunch of dogs were about to get schooled.

  Chapter 16

Silva surprised her, and she felt a little jealous that she hadn’t thought about it first, as absurd as that was. Silva roared and pushed out her dominance, demanding they submit. Tiger shifters didn’t do that normally. It wasn’t that they couldn’t be dominant, she was, it was just cat shifters didn’t play dominance games, they were independent, neither followers nor someone to follow. Of course, the big surprise was Silva wasn’t just using her shifter self to do that, she was drawing from their magic to make herself more powerful, and she was also using spirit magic.

She could feel Silva’s faith in her dominance, and the hard will to push it out over the wolves. Silva’s thoughts were positive her spirit magic could blow away the magic influencing them like a candle flame inside a wind tunnel. Faith, plus will. She was very impressed with her other half. Either magic might have worked on its own, shifter dominance fed by their magical core, or spirit, together it was devastating against non-alpha wolves. Eight of them hit the ground, whined, and bared their throats. The last two, presumably Manny, and some other alpha that was drawn to Jake’s madness, actually faltered before they resumed their charge with an alpha growl of their own.

She was at a five on her scale now, she didn’t even bother with a spell. She no longer needed to. She wrapped her fire magic in ropes of supporting air magic to make it burn hotter, larger, and launched it at one of the two remaining wolves. She wasn’t the only one to attack. Mia sent spears of ice, Fran started casting a spell, Karina sent spikes of ice as well, Elaine and Sharon sent blades of wind, and Mira sent a jet of flame.

The two alpha wolves were immolated, cut and torn apart, impaled, and completely unrecognizable when the magic faded.

Fran finished her chant, and the eight whining and cowed wolves fell unconscious.

Fran shrugged, “I know we said we wouldn’t capture them. But that was before all but two had their tails between their legs. Good job on that Celia.”

Silva sat up regally and started to clean her paw nonchalantly.

  Mia snickered.

She received another snapshot view on request from her air elemental, and growled. It looks like the trap got about half. That left just over thirty werewolves, and only about forty witches to fight them. They had to get back to the battle, but she had no way to tell them that. If they were shifters Silva could do it with mind speech, but that only worked between two shifted people.

Silva scoffed, “You forgot about our spirit magic. I happen to believe they will hear me. They only haven’t in the past, because I didn’t think it was possible. ”

She felt stupid, which meant she made herself feel stupid. She so needed therapy.

Silva sent, “We need to go help, trap half worked, battle still going. ”

Fran looked astonished, “Someone needs to stay here and watch these. I will, if they start breaking my spell I’ll recast it.”

She sent her thoughts to everyone, because now she believed too, “Let’s go.”

Of course, as far as anyone else understood, both comments had come from one person. Their mind voice was the same.

She realized as they ran down the block toward the field, that now Silva would be able to fight back when Berny teased the tiger, even when they were in human form. That will be fun… Of course, Silva can only do that with the few people that know she’s a separate being, but still, maybe she won’t feel so isolated if she can reach out to the people closest to her… or them.

They could hear the growls and sounds of fighting as they got closer. She could scent the blood and magic. She wasn’t sure what to do when she got to the field, it was a free for all, there were dead wolves and witches on the ground. She sensed something very strange and looked over where she felt the source.

Bria stood there surrounded by a ring of fire with her arms thrown out. There was a bright flash of light and a tubed ring of sparkling light, but that was way to slow to be light, expanded away from Bria in all directions. The wolves all shuddered and fell as the light reached them, but she was safe, she knew she was safe simply because she believed it and willed it so. She recognized this as spirit magic, it would not touch her.

Apparently her great great grandmother was right when she told her to learn some spirit magic. What she was doing was basic, but it had turned out to be rather important for this fight.

It wasn’t until she heard the sharp crack of bone that she realized what Bria had done. All the wolves still living were transforming back into their human forms. She’d used spirit magic to force their own spirits to start the transformation. Some of the witches started to chant the sleep spell, the wolves weren’t in a mental place to resist. They finished their transformation and then fell unconscious.

She looked around at the faces, and Jake wasn’t there. She wouldn’t find out until later, but Jake was already dead. He had been pulled under by the Earth witches, suffocated with twenty feet of dirt bearing down on his chest. The question was, what the hell were they supposed to do with the survivors. There were over thirty wolves left alive, including the eight Fran was guarding.

Silva sat down and swished her tail, then nervously looked in the direction of the approaching sirens.

She looked around, Ed and Berny were fine, if a bit banged up. She felt a stirring of joy in her heart, that all her close friends had lived through this, and then a black rush of guilt for all the ones who did not. How dare she feel any joy in the presence of her dead sisters. There were too many dead witches on the ground.

Maybe that’s why Bria risked the magic she risked, to many died to keep the secret of her fae blood. Although she didn’t blame her at all, death was the fault of the wolves, not Bria. She wondered how many though would even realize it had been spirit magic, some, probably most, would believe Bria just knew a spell they didn’t.

It was over, now all they had to do was cleanup, and make nice with the humans of course. She wasn’t overly worried about the live werewolves, the council and human authorities could figure it out. She was an enforcer. She didn’t make those decisions.

Silva walked over slowly and sat between Ed and Berny. Then the great cat stood up on her back paws, and licked Berny from neck to eyebrow.

Silva looked up at Berny’s shocked face with sparkling eyes.

“Revenge is sweet, no teasing the tiger. ”

Berny’s eyes narrowed as Silva’s words entered her mind, the teasing was definitely not over.

She felt it, the stirrings of hope already, they would mourn their losses. But they would move on. She felt blessed despite what happened this night. She was surrounded by those she loved, and her friends. She was finally comfortable in her own skin as a shifter, and she had a handle on all her magic. Sure, she had a long way to go with spirit magic, and mastery with all of it, but it didn’t seem quite so overwhelming anymore.

As for taking over the council, well that wouldn’t happen a for a very long time goddess willing. Since it was her job to protect Bria, she would make sure of it. The only problem was, what the hell was she going to do about all the internet orders?

Silva sent, “Hire more witches, and humans. ”

Hire humans? Now there was an idea…

  Afterword:

I hope you enjoyed this story, if you did please leave a review. Reviews are the lifeblood of independent authors, and I would greatly appreciate any constructive feedback or opinions. This third book tied up a lot of the loose threads, especially regarding character growth. No, she wasn’t fully powered up, but there isn’t much doubt she will get there at this point. I’m not sure if this was the last Celia book, but it might be. This book ended in a place o
f hope, and where she had her life together, on the other hand, I’m not quite sure I’m ready to say goodbye. I also left a lot that could easily fall apart. Celia might object and demand another story, we’ll have to see.
