EVAC (Book 2): Zombie Apocalypse (Alaska) Page 8

by D G Leigh

In the cockpit the pilot applied idle thrust. Revved the engines past fifty percent. Produced a howling hurricane of jet wash. Wind speeds of over one hundred and thirty miles an hour sent every Zak caught in its wake cartwheeling through the air. A three second blast was all that was needed the pilot eased the throttle down.

Springing to their feet the SEALs and survivors reached the tail end of plane. The technician lowered the rescue ladder, a metal strut with climbing pegs either side. Biehn lifted Susan onto the climbing frame. Jo followed one run behind.

Inside the executive fuselage wide leather seats and walnut cladding. Leslie collapsed into the seat next to his girls. “When did the Hilton land?” Checked on Jo's injured leg.

“I'm okay.” She assured him. “I'll stop bleeding once we're in the air.”

“Are you sure?” Leslie wasn't referring to her cut. Tapped the side of his head. “You're not going to do anything stupid again are you?”

“Only this!” She kissed him with all her heart.

The plane's twin engines ramped up as the pilot begged to leave. Biehn remained at the exit with the technician. Hurled Fardip the last member of his squad by the scruff of his neck into the cabin at the same time as shooting something close outside with the technician's shoulder pistol.

The technician didn't retracted the ladder instead removed the holding bolts. It fell straight to the road. “We're clear, Cap.”

The instrument status door light read closed. The pilot engaged full thrust. Crushed gathered Zaks that were climbing the landing gear's stubby wheels. Sent the rest asunder as the plane rocked down the highway. Beating every drag racer's run.

Biehn, Fardip and the technician didn't have time to take a seat. Jo held Leslie's hand tightly, not from the suddenly rush of acceleration but thankful that they were surely on their way to leaving this God forsaken island for good as the Boeing pulled G's and lifted into the air.
