Possibility Days Page 26

by Mary Ramsey

  “What about Johnny?” Diego asked.

I nodded. “Johnny needs your help. Maybe I’m a sucker for a love story, but I want him to be Jen’s friend, and maybe one day something more.”

“I see it too,” he said, shifting the baby in his arms. “They’re so good for each other. And your daughter already loves him so much.”

I could sense my time was coming to an end, which made the words all the more difficult to find. “I know you’ve already lived a full life. You’re literally middle-aged. Not that I mean that as an insult—that was a goal I could only dream of achieving.”

He chuckled. “Sean, it’s okay. Take your time.”

“Promise me you’ll take full advantage of your second chance. Promise me you’ll live your life to the fullest.” I looked down at Angel. “And promise me you’ll take this little guy to Alaska someday.”

  “You have my word.”

I could feel my wings start to emerge. It was like a huge outward pressure, made bearable by a total lightness in my chest. “I’ll never stop watching over you and your family—my family.”

“Thank you, Sean,” Diego bowed his head. In a blink of an eye, Diego woke in his bed, Shauna sleeping on his chest. “Where did you come from?”

She held him close, her tears falling on his shoulder. “I miss Daddy.”

“He’s happy, sweetheart. I promise you.”

Cam and I retreated. He also had his wings. “There’s a reason they can’t see us, Sean.”

“Yeah; the movie’s over, the credits are rolling,” I took one last look at Shauna, and blew her a kiss. “It’s time to leave the theatre to see what lies beyond.”
