Arise (Awakened Fate Book 4) Page 21

by Skye Malone

My brow furrowed. Nothing much lay nearby but shattered trees and smoking debris. A short distance from me, Clay was struggling to rise, his body half-buried beneath kindling much like mine had been. On the far side of the gravel yard, the maroon-robed freak was crumpled and, from the bloodied mess of his body, very clearly dead. A few yards from him was a charred corpse, only a few unburned scraps of fabric hanging from it.

I recognized Owen’s clothes. I glanced around again, wondering what’d been able to do that to him.

The whispering resumed, darker and colder than before. I froze, incredulity hitting me at the same time as understanding.

  My gaze tracked upward.

The storm. The whisper was coming from the storm.

My heart started to pound harder. It wasn’t really in my ears, though. It was in my head. I could feel it. Like a presence, watching me. Studying me. Speaking to me. The words were still gibberish, but somehow, that didn’t matter anymore.

A chuckle left me. My lips pulled back, curling into a smile.

I knew what it wanted me to do.

  About the author

Skye Malone is a fantasy and paranormal romance author, which means she spends most of her time not-quite-convinced that the magical things she imagines couldn't actually exist.

A Midwestern girl who migrated to the Pacific Northwest, she hopes to someday travel the world – though in the meantime she’ll take any story that whisks her off to a place where the fantastic lives inside the everyday. She loves strong and passionate characters, complex villains, and satisfying endings that stay with you long after the book is done. An inveterate writer, she can’t go a day without getting her hands on a keyboard, and can usually be found typing away while she listens to all the adventures unfolding in her head.

Skye also writes young adult urban fantasy as Megan Joel Peterson and is the author of The Children and the Blood trilogy.
