Candace moved closer and gave me a kiss on the head. “My hero, I’m glad you’re alive. Thanks for saving me again.”
“Don’t ever do anything like that again,” I said.
“I’ll try,” she said. She pointed at one of the other people in the room, “Mandy actually helped fix me up.”
I looked over to see Mandy nodding with Mochi in her hands. Mandy moved over to me and I smiled as Mochi licked my face.
“Okay Mochi,” said Mandy. “That’s enough! You’re not even supposed to be in here little girl.”
“Thanks for fixing her up, Mandy,” I said.
“Eh, she wouldn’t stop whining about how much it hurt,” said Mandy. “What about you? Are you feeling alright?”
“I’ll live,” I said.
“Mandy told me I’m going to have a huge bruise for a while, so we can’t do anything too rough, okay?” said Candace.
I smiled back at her.
“Margaritas when the both of you are all better!” said Mandy as she did a little dance.
Everyone in the room laughed. I looked at each of their faces to see Lanvin, Rocket, and Juliet.
“What?” said Mandy. “Don’t be a party pooper, you’ll all love it!”
“I’d love some!” said Lanvin, then he walked over to Mandy and began to pet Mochi. I waited for her to bite him and I think Candace was waiting for it too, but Mochi didn’t bark or bite. I looked over at Candace who was just as shocked as I was. Mandy looked surprised as well, then both Lanvin and Mandy smiled at each other.
I looked over at Candace again and we both shrugged at the same time.
“Anyways,” I said. “What you did was too way too dangerous, Candace, never ever do that again! I can’t believe you would sacrifice yourself for us like that!”
She smiled back at me and I couldn’t be angry at her anymore. “I’m not the only one,” she said.
Right after she said that, I saw someone else in the room. I squinted my eyes to get a better look as the person moved closer to me. It was Sid.
“Hey,” said Sid. I could feel my blood pressure rising but Candace locked her fingers with mine and gave me a squeeze.
“So, uh, Sorry man. I was fucking wrong,” he said. “This girl of yours, she’s a keeper. She didn’t have to what she did, but she did.” Sid smiled at Candace and put her arm around her. “And because of that, she’s alright with me.”
I glared at Sid, still unable to forgive him. “You’re lucky I’m stuck in this bed right now you fuck.”
“Uncle Charlie got Sid out,” said Rocket. “He had to pull a few strings but they eventually let him go.
“Don’t be mad at him, Rainer,” said Candace. “He didn’t know about us. He was just trying to protect everyone for all the shit I did.”
“Yeah,” said Sid. “This was before I knew how badass your girl was. You know I’d never cross you, Rainer. You’re fucking family, man. You’re my brother. I had the best intentions for Crisis.”
Fuck, I guess that makes sense. Goddammit, I guess I’ll let him off the hook this time. “Alright,” I said. “But once I’m out of this bed, I’m still going to kick your fucking ass!”
Everyone around laughed and I smiled. Mandy looked scared but preoccupied with staring at Lanvin, who seemed to catch her eye.
“After the cops came, one of those Wreck fucks got pepper sprayed and beat for pulling a gun out,” said Rocket. “After you passed out, they put you and Candace in an Ambulance and searched everyone. A bunch of their people had unregistered guns so a lot of them got taken in. Uncle told me that they don’t have connections with this department so they’re fucked.”
“Yeah, those fuckers won’t be out anytime soon,” said Sid. “Elijah said that this whole thing wasn’t over.”
“Damn right it isn’t,” I said.
“Hell yeah we’re going to kick their asses!” said Candace.
Sid looked over at her and said, “Nah.”
I glared at him for a moment.
“It’s too dangerous, leave the crazy shit for us guys,” said Sid. “But don’t get me wrong, that don’t mean you can’t ride with us.” Sid pulled her closer and smiled. “Maybe you can help Juliet make some cupcakes.”
“Yes!” screamed Juliet, as her gum almost flew out of her mouth. “Oh my god, it’ll be so fun!”
I smiled at all of them and shook my head. “I think I need a cigarette,” I said.
Sid began to take one out of his pocket.
“No no no!” yelled Mandy. “Are you crazy? If Mochi can’t be in here, you sure as hell can’t be smoking in here!” I watched as she snatched the cigarettes from Sid’s hand.
“Hey!” said Sid as he tried to get it back, “That’s mine!” Mochi started barking at him and Sid put his hands up and backed away.
Lanvin started petting Mochi, which seemed to calm her down. “Stop being a crybaby,” said Lanvin. “I’ll get you another pack later.”
Everyone in the room started to make an oh sound and Sid put his arms into he air again, “Alright alright, fine,” said Sid.
We all laughed for a bit, smiling at one another. Sid had a huge smile on his face, too.
“So how about it Candace?” I asked. “You down to hang out with us?”
“Well…” she said as she bit her lip. Her face looked pretty even as she pondered. “Okay, if you insist.”
I looked over at Juliet who had a big smile on her face as she hugged Rocket.
Lanvin and Mandy were also smiling at each other. Sid, as much as I still wanted to beat the shit out of him, even though I knew he didn’t really do anything wrong, also had a huge smile on his face.
It was nice to see everyone so happy for once. It felt like I was back at Mandy’s place, sipping margaritas with her and Candace. Mochi being a good little puppy as the three of us shared stories. No immediate worries, just hugs and smiles surrounded by the people I loved.
“Guess you’re going to be seeing more of me” said Candace as she kissed my lips. Her beautiful smile and the way her eyes glistened as she looked into mine made me feel at peace.
“Ain’t nothing wrong with that,” I said.
Candace moved closer and started to kiss me over and over all around my face. She was like laughing gas, or whatever the fuck they put in me to stop the pain.
Even though I was stuck in this hospital bed with a bullet wound and wires attached to my body, life actually felt better now. A chance was all it took to make a change.
I gave Candace a chance, and she gave me a chance. And I wouldn’t have done it any other way.
I’ve taken a lot of risks, and I never know what to expect. But that’s the beauty of it: the uncertainty.
With risk comes change, and I’m glad I took a chance on her.
There’s a rough road ahead for all of us, and it might not be pretty. But as long as I got my family and my girl on my side, everything’s going to be alright.
