She blinked at him and shook her head in disbelief.
'Is that a no?' he croaked, looking as if his heart and soul had broken in two.
'God no, Jet!' she shrieked, throwing herself into his arms. 'It's a yes. A very definite yes! I was simply astonished, that's all. Are you sure this is what you want? Are you absolutely sure? I thought you were getting fed up with me being there. I thought you wished I would leave.'
He laughed and got to his feet, slipping the sparkling diamond ring onto the third finger of her left hand as she held it out to him.
'God, no,' he said. 'I was terrified you would leave. I decided on the very first night, that I wanted you to stay. I know it's early days for us, but I've never been more certain of anything in my life. I want you to be my wife. You are my forever, Mia. I love you with all of my heart.'
'And you are mine, Jet Cross. I love you with every fibre of my being. I can't wait to be your wife. Is this really what you wished for? Is this what you asked from the tree?'
He nodded. 'I asked that you would say yes to spending your life with me if I proposed.'
She threw back her head and laughed ecstatically. 'And I wished you would ask me to continue living with you at the farm. I was going to wish that you would propose, but I wasn't sure there was enough magic in the tree to ask for that.'
'Didn't Hettie tell you?' He furrowed his brows before beaming deliriously. 'The Wishing Tree will grant you anything, as long as you ask it nicely. And it'll do so within seven days, if it decides you're worthy.'
'Then thank heavens it thinks we're worthy. I love you, Jet. You've made me the happiest woman alive. This is the best Christmas present in the world. Ever.'
'Damn. I thought the books I've bought you were the best presents ever. They're called 'How to cook anything without blowing up a kitchen' and 'Everything you want to know about farm livestock but are afraid to ask.' Or something like that.' He grinned as she slapped his arm. 'I love you too,' he said, bending his head to kiss her. 'Merry Christmas, Mia.'
'Merry Christmas, Jet.' Mia grabbed the collar of his coat and pulled him towards her, impatient for his kiss. Their very first kiss as an engaged couple.
This was definitely the best Christmas Mia had ever had – so far.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
