“Where do we need to go?” Nick asked as he started the car back up.
“Ohio. To the Serpent Mound.”
“I do not like the sound of that place,” Mike practically whined from the back seat.
I spent the next half hour explaining to my friends what I’d seen in my vision. They seemed leery over the fact that I’d seen two unknown men. For reasons I couldn’t fathom, I tried to soothe my friends and insisted that they were actually helping us in my vision. But why I was trying to talk my friends into the idea of the strangers was completely lost to me.
“Two new guys, huh?” Kimmie asked from behind me. She seemed pretty intrigued by the idea.
“Yeah. Maybe one of us will actually get some, finally,” I joked.
We spent the next few days crammed into the car as we traveled to Ohio to find the Serpent Mound. Thankfully, Aidan wasn’t a fussy baby and traveled extremely well. At such a young age he was already accustomed to life on the road. The vibrations of the car actually seemed to soothe him, and he’d only cry when the vehicle stopped moving.
Finally, after almost four days on the road and three nights sleeping in different hotels, we arrived in Peebles, Ohio. Of course it was late at night when we pulled up, not wanting to draw any attention to ourselves with tourists. Nick parked the car amongst the trees and we all climbed out as quietly as we could. Well, all of us except Josh, who volunteered to stay back at the hotel with Aidan.
We didn’t bother with flashlights since the boys had excellent sight, thanks to the strengthening of their abilities, and because of my vision I knew I exactly where to go. We needed to get to the head of the snake. The scroll we were looking for was right at the mouth, practically buried inside the brush.
We didn’t dawdle, we ran as fast as we could to the head of the effigy mound. Even with as fast as we were moving, the trail was so long it took some time to navigate. The path, luckily, was concrete and level, so it was easy to maneuver, and we made it to the head with no incident.
I blindly reached inside a small opening that seemed as if it was dug into the mound and rifled around for the scroll. Finally, my hand brushed against something soft and I tightened my grip around it, then pulled it free. I held it up for my friends to see and we raced back to our car. We’d already decided in the hotel room that we wouldn’t look at it without Josh present. That just wasn’t fair to him. He was part of the group, too.
The drive back to the hotel seemed to take ages since we were all anxious to see what the scroll said. When we finally made it back, we entered the room to see Josh reclined on the bed with Aidan sleeping soundly on his chest. He raised his finger to his plump lips as if silencing us, and we crept quietly into the room. Nick walked over and leaned down to place a kiss on Josh’s forehead and then reached down to grab his son. I watched as Nick placed Aidan gently down in the portable bassinet, that now went with us everywhere, and he tucked his son in for the night.
“Okay, what does it say?” Josh asked quietly as we got situated on the beds. It was where we always seemed to have group meetings.
I looked down at the weathered paper of the scroll and slowly unknotted a thin piece of rope that was tied around it. I took a deep breath, unrolled it and let out a startled gasp.
“It’s blank,” I said and had to stop myself from yelling in anger.
“What? No way!” Everyone in the room seemed to quietly protest at the same time.
“Here, let me see that,” Kimberly said and reached over to grab the paper.
Suddenly the paper in my hand felt like it was warming up. My fingertips started to burn, and I quickly dropped it from my grasp. We all watched in amazement as golden letters started to appear on the page. And that was when an entirely new prophecy started to spell out right before our very eyes.
Kimmie gasped and stared down at the page she was holding. The surprise in her eyes reflected from the glow of the paper. “Oh, shit.”
Here we go again.
