Jaxson & Ralynn Page 16

“Okay. I gotta find someplace to stay when I get there.”

My mind is whirling. I know she can’t stay at the clubhouse, but maybe my mom will let her stay at their house? “Give me a few minutes, let me make a call. Why don’t you go in and get cooled down a bit while I’m tied up? I’ll watch Lucy.”

She nods and heads inside and I scoop the little dog up and walk with her over to a grassy area, being sure that her leash is snug because I don’t want her escaping. As the phone rings, I think about the little bit I’ve learned so far. She’s curvy, quite a bit shorter than me, and has beautiful curly hair that makes me wanna wrap my hands around it as I’m pounding into her from behind. “Mom? Got a question for you,” I start.

“Luca? Tell me you’re almost home.”

“Yeah, maybe another hour tops. Listen, I ran into someone while filling up gas who is headed towards Corinth. They need a place to stay.”

“I’m sure your dad will be okay if they stay at the clubhouse.”

“She can’t stay at the clubhouse, Mom.” No way in fucking hell am I letting her be seen by my single brothers. I’ve managed to stay on the right side of the law all these years and don’t intend to change that now.

“A woman? Why am I not surprised by this?” she muses, laughter thick in her tone.

  “Mom, c’mon now.”

“Luca, you’ve always brought strays home, whether they had four legs or two. Don’t see why you’d change now. She can stay with us at the house, okay?”

My heartbeat slows at her words. I was ready to maim and kill my brothers over a baseless threat. “Thanks, Mom. Y’all at the clubhouse now?”

“Just waiting on you to get here so we can celebrate.” Fuck. Well, I shouldn’t expect any less because we party over the craziest things. Me being gone for a few years is a good reason to them. I hated that I couldn’t take leave very often when I was in Japan because I missed the hell outta my family.

  “We’ll be there shortly.”

“What’s the young woman’s name, Luca?” Mom inquires.

  “Gypsy. Gypsy Fields.”

The day my mother informed me of who my biological father was I thought I’d be elated. Instead, she taunted and tormented me with the fact that he wouldn’t want me. Apparently, she’s kept tabs on him over the years and has found out that he’s married and that they don’t have any kids after being together for several long years. According to my mother, he never wanted children and it shows in his marriage.

But I want him to look me in my eyes and tell me this himself. My mother is a conniving and manipulative bitch, so I don't ever take to heart anything that she says to me. She’s told me and proven to me over the years how much she despised the fact that she got saddled with a kid with no financial or co-parented support.

This she always lays at my feet and places the blame there. As if I asked her sorry ass to get pregnant and keep me. In my personal opinion, my life would've been much better if she’d given me up at birth. But no, not my mother who wanted the welfare check and food stamps so she didn’t have to get off her lazy ass and hold down a job. She’d much prefer to hang out at the bars and bring home a nightly conquest. Some of the men stuck around for a week or two here and there, but mostly they used her and hit the road the following morning.

This cycle was repetitive throughout my life. I have no respect for men and I’m hoping my father isn’t like the ones I’ve met. If so, I’ll hit the road quicker than an iceberg sank the Titanic. Walking inside I take in the cool air from the air conditioner and want to embrace the cold. I’ve been sweating half to death out in my car, but I was worried about leaving Lucy alone while I came in and cooled off.

Rushing into the bathroom, I look at myself in the mirror and the blue eyes staring back at me are not from the woman I used to know. This one is tired and ready for the start of a new life. One where hopefully my mother stays far away from me. I take a few minutes to refresh myself and use the restroom before strolling back outside. I see Luca holding Lucy in his arms and speaking sweetly to her.

Shaking myself from the thoughts I was beginning to have I walk up and gracefully take her from his arms.

“So, listen. I’ve managed to secure somewhere for you to stay. You’ll have a room to yourself, access to food and people who can help you get your car up and running again. There are some good people where I’m taking you, they won’t take advantage of you or hurt you in any way. I know it’s strange, but my family is all about helping others through tough times.” He’s scratching his head and looking up at me through his long eyelashes. For some unspeakable reason, I find myself trusting and believing him.

  “Umm...okay?”

“Is that a question or are you agreeing?” he inquires.

  “I suppose that’s a yes.”
