“Sweet guy; about like my other clientele.”
This couldn’t be happening. Something about a contract. “I—I don’t have a pen.”
“Just dip your finger in your blood and sign.”
“What?”
“Either sign it or let your miserable short life end here amidst the garbage; I’m late already, and I’ve got thousands of eager customers waiting.” The forbidding stranger turned toward his horse.
“Wait! Come back; I’ll sign.” Johnny didn’t care anymore what was on the paper; all he knew was that he wanted to live. He dipped his forefinger in the warm scarlet stream dripping down his arm and slowly and painfully scrawled his name across the paper.
“Smart hombre.” The other grinned. “All your dreams of long life and riches are about to come true.”
“Nobody gives nothin’ for free,” Johnny gasped incredulously. “What do you get out of this?”
The other looked at him, and the triumphant expression in the soulless eyes sent a sense of dread through Johnny’s very heart. “Why, don’t you know? I get you!”
