A Room Of Dreams (Kosmos Book 0) Page 5

by Simon Horrocks

He glanced over at the device – the 3 tiny lights blinked red.

“I hate to let this stuff go into the unknown, but with our current situation, I have no choice. Ahmed will move up from assistant. It will be fine, he knows what he’s doing.”

The red lights retained their steady sequence. Combined with the beeps from the life signs monitors and the hiss of the ventilator, the situation quickly felt very familiar. And somehow, hopeless. There she was still – beautiful but utterly motionless, as she had been for 4 months.

Talking of Ahmed, that reminded him…

“If it wasn’t for him, we would never have met. Wasn’t it Ahmed who invited you to Max’s birthday meal. I looked up from the chicken liver pate and there you were...”

At that moment, the 3 lights on Amy’s device blinked green in unison, before settling into a rapid sequence – brain activity!

Philip snatched up the applicator, pressed it against his left temple and depressed the plunger. He felt the gentle scratching at his skin as the device buried itself. Then a second later, an electric tickle, as he’d felt before, under the skin and into his skull.

He closed his eyes and waited for their minds to connect. The room began to fade. The hiss and beep became distant. But the sounds changed. He thought he heard an insistent pulsing sound – like an alarm.

Then all went black and silent.

Hexo-G stepped out onto the roof of the hotel. The leather soles of his black boots clacked on the steel steps to the top terrace. The tails of his long coat flapped in the wind.

This night, he had been told, there would be a sign. They had visited and marked him. And now, because only those who had been selected could see, they would appear to him. He, servant of the greater consciousness. He who had promised to fulfil their unknowable desire – as surely Sapiens cannot fathom the actions of the true creators. Sapiens who paint stars as silver sprinkles, who imagine fire to be the destroyer of worlds, who travel through space on machines built with sticks and stones?

No – only Sapiens who could comprehend the futility of reasoning could stand a chance of obtaining the slightest hint of true knowledge.

Only then would they permit him. Only then would they bestow the eye-gift. Their object of K.

He would work for them, here, within this dimension. The plane they called ‘sorrow’. He would bring them the secret from the woman’s mind. The secret their enemies had stolen. A secret with the power to change the fortunes of those who knew how to wield it. Certainly not in the clumsy 5-digited paws of man. Neither so in the dreams of the one called Louis Lewis. Surely, yes – he would have his opportunity to realise; to fully accept his singular insignificance; to surrender to true power; to end his ego before it brought the end upon itself.

That path was free to all.

But he had known men long enough to feel pessimistic.

Hexo-G gazed up to the limitless heavens – stars masked in the light-pollution of the city, thin clouds rushing overhead. He felt the energy in the air and anticipated they would soon show themselves to him. Then, as the mists began to draw aside like the curtains of a theatre revealing the stage, he saw the first one – burning brightly, just above the city to the north. Then another, and another, until there were 5, like new suns hanging across the horizon.

He removed his sunglasses to reveal the new mark in his right eye: the object of K they had, in their knowingness, gifted him. He mumbled a prayer and let them see he was marked by them and for them – so that he may avoid destruction, in their timeless Knowledge.
