Volatile Breath of Darkness Page 34

being in there. She closed the door, walked across the room and sat down in a chair. Facing an enforcer

sent by the Evolved was easy compared to dealing with Adam Vlacic. She lifted the card to her nose and

breathed in his warm, spicy masculine scent.

She wished she dared to go to dinner with him, but getting involved with any type of demon wasn’t

happening. She knew he was different, but in some ways they were all the same. Merciless, ruthless, way

  too powerful bastards.

The sudden sound of a gunshot brought her to her feet. She rushed to the door and opened it. She

was absolutely shocked to see one of the police officers that had the enforcer cuffed, was sprawled out on

the ground. From out of nowhere Adam stepped in front of the door. He had a funny smile. As if he was

doing something wrong, or planned to do something. She realized the enforcer had a gun at Adam’s

head. He wouldn’t shoot if she left with him. It didn’t matter. She would get away once again.

“Get out of the room. Get your ass moving. Come with me or he dies.”

Adam gave her a smile and winked. “Go back inside and shut the door, Hanna. No one is going to

  die.”

She shook her head. “It’s not your problem.”

Smiling wider and looking a special kind of combo of sexy, naughty, badass, he nodded. “Do it,

Hanna. Go back inside and shut the door.” She felt his words commanding her body. It pissed her off.

Especially since she tried to fight it, but couldn’t.

Joseph stood back as Adam got control of the man. Another police officer showed up and began to take

  charge.

“How did he get out of the cuffs and get the officer’s gun?” Joseph asked.

“He faked a seizure,” Adam said. “He is not my friend.”

“I figured that since he had a gun to your head.”

“That’s not why. He’s hunting her.”

Joseph smiled. “Adam finally found a lady to interest him.”

  “You have no idea.”

  “You’ve got it that bad?”

  “Worse I’m afraid.”

One the police officers approached Joseph. “We want to bring Hanna down for questioning.”

“I’ll bring her to the station,” Adam offered, using a compulsion to ensure he got his way.

When the officer walked away Joseph slapped Adam’s arm. “I know how you are. All happy go

lucky, but it’s not what’s in us when certain females are being threatened. Try to avoid killing everyone.

Pick and choose the most dangerous.”

“I don’t’ believe in leaving enemies to come back and bite me in the ass.”

Using his mind to open the electronic key lock, Adam opened the door and walked inside the room.

“How did you open the door?”

“It wasn’t locked. The police want you to go down to the station and answer some questions. I’ll take

  you.”

“It’s not necessary. I can take myself.”

“You should never allow yourself to be questioned by the authorities without an attorney.”

  “I’ll get one.”

  “You already have one…me.”

She took his card from her back pocket. “You are an antique dealer.”

“I happen to moonlight as an attorney on occasions.” He handed her another business card.

She reached for it. “What else do you moonlight in?”

“I’ve a small fleet of fishing boats in Russia.”

“Of course you do. What else?”

“I enjoy traveling. What do you enjoy?”

A frown formed on her face. “I need to go, Adam. If I go to the police station they will send me back

  to the Evolved.”

“So you don’t go to the police station.”

“I don’t want cause any trouble for you. I need you to look the other way while I run off.”

  “That’s not happening.”

  “Why?”

“You want me to admit that a girl outran me? Nope. Sorry. It’s not happening. I have an extra room

in my suite. You will stay with me.”

  “No.”

  “It has a lock.”

“I just saw you open a locked door without a key.”

“It’ll be a safe place for you to sort things out. No one will find you. The police won’t look for you.”

She nodded. “You had better not be expecting sex.”

“I will keep my hands to myself.” He motioned to direct her. Letting her run off wasn’t an option. It

seemed her enemies were powerful, but all were destroyable. He wasn’t worried about his ability to

destroy them, but he knew it would take time to track them all down.

She lowered her gaze to his crotch. “You will keep that to yourself as well.”

“I won’t be bringing that out until you beg me to do it.”

  About Candice Stauffer

I live in Zeeland, Michigan, where half the year is winter and the other, much shorter half, is

summer. It’s a wonderful place to live as long as you own a four-wheel drive vehicle and happen

to get a kick out of measuring the snowfall in feet rather than inches.

I write paranormal romance because I love to explore and manipulate the limitless

possibilities of the genre. To be completely honest, I’m also very fond of taking a totally hot,

powerful, immortal hero and using a strong, confident, beautiful heroine to turn his world upside

down and make him fight like hell for a victory that seems impossible to achieve. Some might

call it torture. I call it entertainment and character building. Regardless, it’s great fun!

I have a strong aversion for helpless heroines. Though she’s afraid, a heroine must always be

willing to fight like hell—and, yes, even if the fighting is against the hero. I’m not sure why, but

I tend to really enjoy it when the heroine fights against the hero. Putting a hero through the

  wringer builds personality, right?

I’m often accused of being a little bit naughtier than nice and slightly rough around the edges.

Okay, I lied—very rough around the edges. Life has been a challenge. But I’m grateful for every

challenge I’ve faced. Through them, I’ve learned to focus on the goal rather than the walls

surrounding it. Basically, I figure that as long as I enjoy life and do all I can to encourage and

help the people around me enjoy life, it’s all good.
