‘Where are you?’ he asked.
‘At Vicky’s,’ she said. ‘We’ve been working out how to get Julie bail tomorrow. And if we can’t, who’s going to look after Anna?’
‘I should think she’ll find a sympathetic judge,’ Thackeray said. ‘We’re not on opposite sides in this, you know.’
‘You’ve charged her with murder!’ Laura’s outrage almost made his ear burn.
‘David will explain why,’ he said quietly. ‘The CPS will make the final decision, anyway.’
Laura seemed to take a moment to digest this and in the background Thackeray could hear the sound of a child crying, a sound that triggered an almost physical pain somewhere deep inside him.
‘Are you coming home?’ he asked.
‘Is that where you are?’
‘I wanted to see you,’ he said, knowing how inadequately that conveyed the desperation he felt. ‘It’s been a God-awful day for families. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and wondered if maybe we couldn’t do it better. We could hardly do it worse.’
‘D’you really mean that?’ Laura asked, her voice almost inaudible.
‘I think so,’ he said.
‘I was trying to get Naomi back to sleep when you rang. She’s been disturbed by all the noise.’ Laura laughed. ‘I’m not very good at it,’ she said.
‘You’ll learn,’ Thackeray said.
