by Flora Ferrari

“How in the world?” she asks.

“I made some calls when you were in the shower this morning.”

  “Some calls?”

“I guess the old saying is true.”

  “What’s that?”

“American Express…don’t leave home without it.”

“I need to get an AmEx card.”

“You know what’s better than an AmEx card?”

  “What’s that?”

“The things it can help you with when you know what you want and you don’t want another minute to go by without that which you absolutely have to have.”

“I can see that, although I didn’t know your desire for a Santa Barbara brunch was quite that strong.”

“But brunch on the beach isn’t the best part,” I say, turning towards her.

I reach in my pocket and pull out the small black box.

  “Mack!”

“Dawna, we started this adventure as two separate people, but quickly became one. And when I started this adventure I had no idea how it would end, and in some ways I still have no idea…but in others I’m absolutely clear.”

I can see she’s shaking. I open the box, and tears stream down her cheeks.

“I want to join you on this crazy journey, and not only to pursue your comedic dreams, but to pursue all your dreams. I want to be with you, and when the time is right I want to start a family with you and for us all to start a journey together. We are experts after all.”

“Yes, we are,” she says, wiping her tears. “We sure are.”

“So what do you say? Let’s keep this train rolling down the track, together. They call this the golden state, and I didn’t come here looking for gold, because I already found it somewhere back in El Paso.”

  “Awww.”

  “Dawna, will you marry me?”

I see her taking in the size and the sparkle of the ring and her face tells me she’s absolutely overwhelmed, but I also know this is all happening so fast that I might be coming on too strong, but I don’t care. I’m not about to let her get away. I want her for mine, forever. And when I told her I wanted to start a family with her when the time is right, I meant as soon as she’s ready, because the time is right for me right now…the time is right for everything when it comes to her.

  “Yes, Mack. Yes! Yes! Yes!”

I slide the ring on her finger. A perfect fit.

She leans into me and hugs me tight, before quickly pulling back for a deep kiss.

We hold each other on the beach as the waves roll in. We’ve lost sense of time, as we’re one with nature and most importantly…each other.

“Sorry to interrupt,” I hear coming from behind us. “Your drinks and brunch, sir.”

  “Thank you,” I say.

  “And our drone captured everything.”

“You guys are the best. Thank you.”

  “Drone?” Dawna says.

“It’s amazing how silent they can make those things these days.”

  “There’s video of this?”

“From the sea to the sand, or should I say the ocean to us.”

  “You thought of everything.”

“I want to relive this moment over and over whenever we can.”

“But wait. What about your shop?”

“You know I realized something last night. Watching you up there on stage, sharing in your joy made me happier than I’ve ever been. And it made me realize what happiness really means, making other people happy.”

“Thank you, but I don’t catch you. How does that pertain to your shop?”

“Axel will run the shop now. It’s time. He’s a great mechanic. He’s put in his dues, and he knows how everything runs. I could hear the excitement in his voice this morning when I told him.”

“You gave him the shop this morning?”

“Didn’t give it to him, just made him the manager…put him in charge of everything. I’ll still own the shop and take my normal cut, but I won’t need to be there for the day to day stuff…which will give me all the time I need to be your personal chauffeur, taking you to wherever this adventure leads us.”

“Not taking me, joining me. You are truly incredible.”

“But what’s not incredible is that car of ours. We should probably pick up a new one sometime soon. We can get a tour bus with a driver if need be. Slap a big ol’ picture of you on the side.”

  “Picture of us.”

  “Even better.”

  “And let me guess…American Express.”

  “Don’t leave home without it.”

“Don’t leave home without you! That’s for sure. You’re my good luck charm. My road warrior doing whatever it takes to get me to my shows, and I love you for it. I love you. I love you. I love you!”

Her words make this whole thing feel complete, but she is a comedian so I know she’ll appreciate some comedic relief.

“Are you going to use this in your material?” I joke.

“No way. This is special. This is you and me. This is no laughing matter.”

  “But the car?”

“Oh yeah. I have to find a way to work that in.”

  We both laugh.

“So it’s a deal. You can use the material, but I want to use you.”

  “Use me?”

“To be my very own baby making machine.”

“There’s just one problem with that?”

  “What’s that?”

“You can’t use the willing. I want nothing more than a full carload for the rest of our adventures in this journey called life.”

“Exactly what I want, with you.” I laugh.

  “What’s so funny?”

“I spent my whole life working on cars for other people, but it wasn’t until I got back behind the wheel of a car for myself and took my own adventure that life really worked out for me. But it has nothing to do with the car, and everything to do with you.”

  She laughs.

“Okay, my turn. What’s so funny?”

“It’s the same for me. I finally took the biggest chance of my life and I got the biggest reward. And I’m not talking about my dream of performing at the top comedy clubs in the world, I’m taking about the man who completes me, and compliments me in every way. And the man I’m going to share it all with. You.”

I reach for our mimosa glasses, handing her one.

“To us, and the pursuit of our next adventures…together, officially.”

  “To us,” she says.

  “I love you.”

  “I love you.”
