The Aether Witch (The Coven: Elemental Magic Book 6) Page 30

by Chandelle LaVaun

The car I was driving slid through a huge puddle, hydroplaning for a second before the tires caught the street again. I gasped and choked on my tears.

I shouldn’t have been driving. I knew that. I knew it was dangerous. But I also knew whatever those guys put in our drinks hadn’t fully set in yet. They hadn’t even had their fun yet. I glanced over at my best friend and prayed they hadn’t had their fun yet.

She was out. I squeezed her wrist, and my heart sank. Her pulse was too slow, too weak. I didn’t understand why I was awake still. And the looks on those guys’ faces told me they didn’t understand either.

We shouldn’t have been at that party.

It shouldn’t have gone down like that.

And I definitely shouldn’t have left that baseball bat I’d used to smash their faces in back at their house.

It was evidence, and I’d left it behind. I’d been so focused on getting us gone I hadn’t been thinking straight. My brain was fuzzy and slow. I didn’t know if anyone would believe me. After all, I stole someone’s car. Police sirens wailed behind me, and blue lights flashed through the rain. I hissed and cringed, the brightness stinging my eyes.

  But I didn’t slow down.

I knew they were coming for me. I was sure those monsters had called us in as car thieves. But I didn’t care. I wasn’t about to sit around and wait for the cops to show up at the house. I wasn’t going to give them one more chance to hurt us.

The bright white lights of the hospital shined like a beacon a few blocks up.

  So close.

  We were almost there.

Sharp pain shot through my left arm like someone had lit me on fire. I screamed and tried to move my arm, but my muscles locked and my hand tightened on the steering wheel. The burning grew hotter and spread across my arm. I looked down and choked on a scream. Fire shot out of my skin. Pink flames covered my left forearm. Oh God. I was hallucinating. I didn’t know if any of it was real. Fire wasn’t pink.

But the pain…the pain was too much. I couldn’t handle it. My whole body spasmed like I’d been thrown into a fiery pit. My pulse kicked into overdrive. Fresh, hot tears poured down my face. I gasped and tried to breathe through the pain, but I couldn’t catch a breath. My vision blurred, and little squiggly, glowing white lines spread behind my eyes.

I slammed on the brakes on instinct then realized my mistake too late.

I’d been driving too fast on a road covered in water. The car slid across three lanes. The tail end whipped around, spinning the small sedan in tight circles. My stomach turned and flipped. My heart stopped beating. Blue neon lights blurred by, and then we were weightless, flying through the air. My long hair flew up around my face.

The world spun, and then everything crashed down around me. I squeezed my eyes shut. Glass shattered and sliced into my bare skin. Something hard slammed into my face. Police sirens wailed around me, now even closer.

My body screamed. My head was heavy. My arm throbbed. I opened my eyes then blinked a few times.

Everything was blurry and out of focus…and upside down.

Blood dripped into my eyes. I shook my head, and the world spun. My stomach turned. Something sharp dug into the side of my neck. I gasped for air, but there was a weight pressing on my chest. Outside the shattered windows of the stolen car, I saw the bright white lights of the hospital and flashing blue. People screamed. Footsteps thundered toward the car, and dark outlines rushed toward us.

  We made it. Kinda.

I looked at my arm to where that pain had been. The pink flames were gone. In its place were the letters XVI marked on my skin in thick black ink. I frowned. That can’t be real.

  Did they tattoo me?

  My magic burns inside me.

Not all soulmates are created equal. Some of them are relieved to find each other. Some build a relationship nice and slow. And for some of them it’s that all consuming, love-at-first-sight kind of magic, like my twin sister Tegan and her other half, Tennessee.

Then there are some where the girl is so up in her head and freaked the hell out that she actually, sorta, kinda, resents the guy who’s supposed to bring her happiness simply for his mere existence.

  AKA. ME.

It’s time for me to be the soulmate Deacon deserves, even if it means trading in my cowgirl boots for designer stilettos. But Manhattan is a huge, terrifying city full of dark secrets and a society of witches determined to tear us apart.

  My magic doesn’t define me.

Within my secret, ancient race of witches, everyone prays to join the most powerful circle of all—The Coven. Well, everyone except for me. All I want is to discover the truth of the past that was stolen from me. So I lay low, defending the world from demons and training to strengthen my magic.

But when I discover an artifact that can defeat the demons for good, I’m forced to do the one thing I never wanted—claim my rightful place in The Coven so I can hunt down the artifact myself.

I know my success will require sacrifices, but I fear I won’t be able to handle the price…
