  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I could probably spend this entire book recalling nuances from the run of one play or the adventures of a single film location. But economy and my desire to give an affectionate survey of my fortunate career prevents that attention to detail. If, after some six decades, recollections and secondhand stories have faded, blended, or lost their proper chronology, I apologize to all participants for any flawed reporting. It’s been a long haul. Regarding the sin of omission, I beg forgiveness of any friends or coworkers who feel slighted by exclusion: surfing buddies, drinking companions, lovers, FX makeup teams, prop crews, costars, and film editors who saved my sorry ass—you know who you are and how much you have meant to me.

For words of early encouragement, advice, career direction, and teaching: Jean Klenes, Deane Wolfson, Steve Allen, Janice Farquar, James Rawley, Jeff Corey, Paul Lee, Joseph Shaw, John Fernald, and Lawrence Carra.

For professional guidance, past and present, thank you, Lew Sherrell and Jo Martin, who put up with me during the seventies; Joseph E. Rice, who has returned my calls and been my good friend and agent since 1982; Wayne Rice, whose artistic savvy and foresight as the architect of my finances has given me the freedom to live for the past twenty years in my little bungalow by the sea with my best girl and my old dogs by my side and the happy ghosts of my parents looking on; and Stephen Lo, for all those airline upgrades. And to Harry Abrams, whose letterhead gives this old whore a touch of class.

To friends old and new, Gary Tigerman, Doug Matheson, Russ Laxson, Steve Smith, Terry Judge, Hugh Corcoran, David Himes, Bruce Gray, Jonathan Benair, Chris Buchinsky, Rick Dano, Anthony Friedkin, David Irving, Don Bajema, Bob Lepucki, Jane Handel, Loris Curci, and my best buddy, Demetre Phillips.

A heartfelt thank-you to Wes Craven and Tobe Hooper for taking the time to write those kind words, and for hiring me time and again. And thanks to Carly Feingold for her help in wrangling Wes.

Thanks to everybody at Pocket Books, especially my editor Jaime Costas, VP and Deputy Publisher Anthony Ziccardi, and Publisher Louise Burke, as well as to Jarred Weisfeld and the gang at Objective Entertainment.

A special thanks to my collaborator, Alan Goldsher, who managed to somehow quickly and accurately assimilate a zillion stories into a cool little book that I’ll always be proud of.
