Brett opened the card propped against the flickering candle. “It’s from my mother...and dad. It says to make a toast to our future, then celebrate our love for each other.” He tossed the card on the table and he pulled his bride into his arms as his mouth closed over hers. The kiss was hungry and impatient for both of them.
“I’ll go get changed in Mac’s room,” Brett said breathlessly as he released her and started backing away. “That’ll give you a little privacy.” He finally turned and went out the door.
It didn’t take Jessie long to remove her dress and hang it in the closet. She replaced it with an ivory satin nightgown she’d bought on a shopping trip to Dallas with Caroline and Maggie. She examined herself in the mirror, seeing the low neckline and the way the cool material hugged her body. Was it too daring? she wondered, while at the same time hoping Brett was going to think she looked beautiful. She took the pins out of her hair and brushed soft curls around her face. Jessie released a long sigh to relax and walked to the window. It wasn’t long before she heard the click of the bedroom door.
Brett saw his bride standing in the moonlight and felt his heart race even faster than when he’d seen her walk down the aisle. He adjusted the belt on his satin robe, walked to the nightstand and opened the champagne. He poured some into the crystal flutes. Carrying them to his bride, he handed her one.
“Here, this may help you relax,” he said. She raised her gaze to his, her eyes filled with such passion it nearly made it impossible to take his next breath. Damn! He wanted to make this night so special.
He raised his glass. “To us, Jessie. To our love that’s only going to grow more with each passing day.”
Their glasses made a tinkling sound when they touched.
“Oh, Brett, that’s lovely,” she breathed, then sipped her champagne as did he.
Brett took the wine flute from her hand and set both glasses on the dresser, then turned back to her. “I want our life together to be so perfect, Jessie. I want to give you the world, make all the lonely years disappear.”
She stopped his words by touching her finger to his lips. “You’re all I want, Brett.” She placed a kiss on his mouth. “And in a few years, your baby.” Her hands moved over his chest, then circled his neck.
Brett’s heart leapt. “Oh, Jessie, I love you,” he assured her, as his hands caressed her bare arms. He leaned forward and his teeth bit playfully along her lower lip. “And I want to make love to you.”
“Oh, Mr. Murdock, I’m ready,” she purred.
He raised his head and tried to look serious. “Do I need to worry about a shotgun hidden under the bed?”
Jessie shook her head as she moved against him impatiently. “No more. I’ve changed Brett. You made me realize I didn’t need to be afraid. I don’t need to hide out on the farm.”
Brett remembered that first day he’d laid eyes on Jessie. He glanced down at the silky nightgown she had on and wondered how he’d ever mistaken her for a boy. “Just so long as you stay my wildcat.”
“For you always,” she promised as his mouth covered hers.
Brett quickly roused her passion and his grew stronger. He’d never thought he would find love like this. Now he understood all the secret looks and the glances his parents had shared over the years. Tyler and Maggie had found their special love, too. Now he had the same magic with Jessie. Forever.
