Sometimes the image of the two of them rises before me, unbidden, like a dream. They float somewhere, neither happy nor dead, young, untethered, free. Their arms are spread wide, their hair and clothing billow behind them. They are in a place without gravity, without sensations. Nothing tugs at them.
It’s true that I never wanted to grow up. But how important was it really – to have decided to be human?
About the Author
Rachel Klein received her BA and MA degrees in English Literature from the University of Michigan, where she received Hopwood Awards for both translation and short story. Her work has been published in the Chicago Review and the Literary Review. She lives in Brooklyn with her family.
