I hit play on the keyboard. Mom leaned against my bedroom door, holding the laptop for Dad to see as I took my place in the middle of my room. The opening chords sounded, and I stared deeply into the stuffed monkey’s eyes.
“I know you don’t think so, but it’s tru-u-ue . . .”
Behind me, Sophia and Leila sang along loudly, but Maya and Lucy were already cracking up. I dipped the monkey like we were ballroom dancing.
“I can move, I can dance, better than you-u-u . . .”
Mom and Dad were starting to laugh, too, but I was in total performance mode now. The synthesized drumbeat I’d programmed kicked in, and I danced like a short-circuiting robot, flailing and twitching and spinning while Mom, Dad, and my best friends cheered me on.
