When I Knew You Page 27

by KE Payne

“Still do,” Nat answered, her lips still against Ash’s. She paused. “Ash?”

  “Mm-hmm?”

“Can we date?” she asked. “Can we get to know one another all over again?” She looked into her eyes and read the meaning in them.

Ash pulled Nat closer. “I think I’d like that very much,” she said.

“Starting with dinner?” Nat asked. “Livvy’s letter said—”

“I read it.” Ash smiled. “The Fisherman has a table with our name on it.”

“Somehow I think Livvy might be with us in spirit when we go there,” Nat said.

“And that would make things perfect, wouldn’t you say?”

Ash kissed Nat’s hair. “More than perfect,” she said with a smile.

  Epilogue

A thin spiral of smoke was rising from the chimney of Holly Cottage as Ash made her way back up from the boat. She stopped for a moment and stared up at it, watching it twist and turn in the breeze before disappearing into the night sky. Ash flipped her collar up higher against the bitter November wind and clicked her fingers to Widgeon, who immediately fell into step beside her.

The smell of cooking from inside the cottage when she opened the front door instantly made her feel hungry. Kicking off her dirty boots, she made her way into the kitchen to investigate. A simmering pan on the stove brought the smells closer to her, and she wandered over to it, then lifted the lid to see what was inside.

Feeling arms encircling her from behind, she leaned into the embrace, savouring the warmth of the body that was now pressed up against her.

“How was your day?” Nat’s hair tickled Ash’s ear.

“Busy.” Ash turned around and looped her arms over Nat’s shoulders. “Two trips either side of lunch. Not bad for mid-November.” She kissed her gently. “Yours?” she asked when she pulled away again.

“I’ve nearly finished the paper,” Nat said.

  “The piece for The Lancet?”

“The very same.” Nat smiled. “Something about the peace and quiet here agrees with my studies.”

“And you had time to cook too.” Ash threw a look towards the stove. “I could get used to this.”

“Good.” Nat kissed Ash’s forehead. “You should.”

“I wanted to show you something.” Ash released herself from Nat’s embrace and took her hand. “Come on.” She pulled her towards the door.

They stepped outside and stood on Ash’s doorstep, looking up into the endless night sky.

“Stars just like beads,” Ash said, wrapping her arms around Nat. “Exactly like I told you all those weeks ago in London.”

Ash saw the look of happiness spread across Nat’s face as she gazed up at the stars.

“I’d like to think Livvy’s looking down on us right now,” Nat said. “If only so we can tell her how much her letters have helped.” She looked at Ash. “Do you think she knows?”

“Oh, she knows.” Ash pulled Nat closer to her and smiled up at the stars. “She definitely knows.”

  About the Author

KE Payne was born in Bath, the English city, not the tub, and after leaving school, she worked for the British government for fifteen years, which probably sounds a lot more exciting than it really was.

Fed up with spending her days moving paperwork around her desk and making models of the Taj Mahal out of paperclips, she packed it all in to go to university in Bristol and graduated as a mature student in 2006 with a degree in linguistics and history.

After graduating, she worked at a university in the Midlands for a while, again moving all that paperwork around, before finally leaving to embark on her dream career as a writer.

She moved to the idyllic English countryside in 2007 where she now lives and works happily surrounded by dogs and guinea pigs.
