“Then it’s time for me to move on as well,” Red said decisively. “Norah and I talked it over, and this was the final wee push we needed.”

  Beside him, Norah nodded.

“We’ll leave for Glasgow,” Red said. “This place has too many bad memories, and no’ enough new chances. Our family needs a fresh start, and Glasgow will be the best place for the business. Best o’ luck, Cormac. I hope we meet again.”

Cormac nodded, slapping his friend hard on the back, then turning away before anyone saw the tears in his eyes. You will have to leave your friends behind, Gunnar had warned him. He had never expected it to hurt this much.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Jamie take the last shell from Anja, his hand softly brushing her skin and his eyes meeting hers.

“I’ll stay here a wee while longer,” Jamie said. “Who knows where life at sea might take me. I dinnae think I’m ready to settle inland just yet.”

Cormac hugged his sons close one last time, breathing in the scent of their curly hair, holding their warm little bodies against him. They would be safe, and they would be loved. He let them go, turning away as his friends and family left, the sounds of their footsteps on the sand fading away into nothingness.

Lisbetta slipped her hand into his as they stood gazing out to sea, Anja beside them.

“Are you ready for another adventure, wife?” he asked, and both sisters laughed.

“I think we are all ready,” Anja said, her voice lighter than Cormac had ever heard it before. “The time has come for a new dawn in our kingdom of the sea.”

And so they left the land behind.

Cormac stepped into the waves, feeling the familiar coolness swirling up around him. He let his magic unfurl once more, and he plunged back into the deep water as two seals swam past him, dancing around each other.

Rona, he called out, feeling the entire ocean reverberate with his thoughts. Rona, it’s time to come home.
