  Chapter 1

  “Frankie, what’s going on?”

  “Nothing! Go in the bedroom.”

Levi looked out the window at the loud, approaching hogs. Looking back at Frankie she frowned, “It’s Vic and Tig… Why do you have your gun out? What the hell did you do?”

Frankie moved her out of the way of the window with a swipe of his beefy arm and in a voice that sent chills down her spine, he growled, “Get in the bedroom. Get in the closet, or under the fucking bed. Don’t come back out here until I tell you to no matter what, understand?” Levi opened her mouth to say something but he had a look in his eyes that threatened to be even more dangerous than the one he usually got right before he kicked her ass. She looked toward the door again and at the same time nervously moved toward the hall. Frankie gestured with his hand for her to hurry up as heavy footsteps sounded on the front porch and someone pounded on the door. His focus was on the door then and Levi stopped and looked back at him. He had sweat rolling slowly down the side of his face and the hand he was holding the gun in was shaking. This was fucking bad.

Levi made it to the back bedroom and started moving empty beer bottles and overflowing ashtrays from the dresser in front of the window. She was smart enough to know that whatever was going on if Frankie was this worried, she needed to get her ass out of there and fast. She was disgusted at what a pigsty the little dump they lived in was. When she first moved in with Frankie she did her best to make it a home. Over the past year, she’d realized that her efforts were futile and when she wasn’t at work she’d started staying as drunk or as high as possible so that she didn’t have to think about it. The funny thing was that she hadn’t smoked a joint or touched a drop of alcohol in almost two weeks. It figured she’d be stone cold sober for this shit. She should have already been on the road but Frankie had come home unexpectedly. She wiped the blood from the slap he’d given her across her face, off of her mouth with the back of her hand and she wondered if she was going to get out of here alive at all.

She heard the pounding on the door stop and loud male voices in the living room. She took advantage of the noise and slid the window open slowly. Some serious shit was about to go down and she didn’t want any part of it. Vic and Tig were both Sergeant at Arms for the Sons of Warlock Motorcycle Club. They were Frankie’s friends, closer than brothers and up to this point no matter how stupid he got if he needed discipline his surrogate father and VP of the club was the one to dole it out. They only sent in their Sergeant at Arms when serious shit needed to be taken care of and the Prez and VP wanted to make sure their hands were clean. Levi got the feeling as she listened to the shouting that these guys weren’t here as his friends or his brothers and Frankie’s luck was about to run out.

Frankie had grown up in the club and because of that, he was often given special treatment by the men that ran it. His father had been killed in prison by a rival gang. He’d been incarcerated for refusing to snitch on his brothers and because of that, he was a legend in the club. His mother was some junkie club girl Frankie’s dad knocked up and as soon as the baby had been born he’d thrown her out. He was raised by the women in the club and learned how to be a man by watching the man that took him in after his father went to prison, Max Vincent. Max went by the moniker, ‘Vicious,’ and Levi thought it was more than fitting. He was one of the founders of the club and for more than twenty-five years he’d sat at the table where all of the club decisions were made. He also ran the porn and drug operations and by the time Frankie was twelve he was running drugs and had no respect for women. What he did have going for him was that he was gorgeous and smart enough to know how to manipulate any woman into getting what he wanted. That was how he’d gotten Levi and his true colors didn’t come out until six months later when she got her first taste of them on the receiving end of his fists.

Levi was working as a waitress in a little hole in the wall diner when she met Frankie and living in a studio apartment with her friend Cami. She was having fun but beginning to crave a real life. She moved in with him three months after they met and the first few months were all fun and games. She heard another loud commotion from the living room. There was a lot of grunting and banging…it sounded like a fight or at least a struggle. Levi was no stranger to violence. Frankie’s job in the club had been one of an “Enforcer.” He doled out punishments to those that the club deemed worthy and as part of his sick, abusive personality, he often took Levi along and made her watch. She couldn’t deny that when she finally decided to leave she’d actually considered talking to someone about all of the things she’d witnessed. At least that way she’d be given protection if Frankie came looking for her. But as much as she craved a new life, she didn’t want to build it on being a snitch and looking over her shoulder the rest of her life.

“I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about!” Levi flinched as she heard Frankie’s loud voice followed by the sound of flesh against flesh and a loud groan. “Fuck! I’m telling you…” Smack!

“Listen you stupid fuck. They know it was you. Sanchez was busted with the guns and he gave you up to the fucking ATF.”

“Shit! He’s lying. He’s just trying to save his own ass…”

“That might be halfway believable Frank if not for the fact that the description of those guns exactly matches the description of the ones in the crate that went missing a few months back. Remember? You were on watch that night…”

“And the shipment came in minus one of the crates!” Frankie said in a pressured voice. “That’s who you need to be looking for, whoever took that crate.”

“We’re looking at him,” Vic said. “I was there the day we caught up to those Irish assholes, you remember. That one ginger mother-fucker was praying and swearing up and down they delivered the goods and took the money and left. He said they delivered them all to you and that makes sense Frankie since you were the only one there. But we took your side…remember? That freckle-faced redhead and his skinny partner became shark-bait for ripping off the Sons and for trying to blame you. We did all that for you, Frankie and what did you do?”

  “Nothing! I didn’t do…” Smack!

Levi cringed. She thought that Frankie deserved an ass whipping for no other reason than the way he treated her. But it was hard to stand there and listen to. She should be out the window already and on her way out of town. Morbid curiosity about how this would all turn out kept her glued to the spot.

“Look asshole you’re just wasting our time. We didn’t come her
e to get a confession out of you. They know you took the guns and sold them to the Mexicans. All Red Bull and Vicious wants is their money.”

  “Let me talk to Max…”

Vic snorted. “Think Daddy Max is going to get you out of this one? You’re fucked in the head if you think he’s going to even associate himself with this shit. He didn’t say one word in your defense at the table this morning. We have ATF breathing down our necks now because of you. Nobody is going to save your ass Frankie so your best bet is to just give us the fucking money you made off of sixty automatic weapons and we’ll go. You can run or you can stay and deal with the ATF, your choice.”

It was quiet for a second and then Frankie said, “They didn’t send you here to kill me?” That was exactly what they were there for and there was no one in that house that didn’t know it, Levi thought. They wanted the money and as much as Frankie loved to gamble, Levi doubted there was much if any of that left. Either way he was dead and she would be too if she didn’t get the hell out of there. She slipped off her shoes and climbed up onto the dresser as she heard Tig say, “No man, you know how Vicious feels about you. He can’t save your ass from the ATF but you think he’d give orders to kill you? Tell us where the money is so you can get the hell out of here. They were still at the club when we left, but they won’t be far behind.”

“I buried it, in the desert. I can show you…”

“I’m finished playing games with you dickhead!”

The next impact Levi heard wasn’t flat-handed. She knew the sound of a fist and the crunch of bone well. She heard a thud and Frankie yelling, “Fuck! You broke my fucking nose!” His voice sounded funny, almost comical if not for the situation. Levi realized as she listened that she didn’t feel any sympathy for Frankie. She wasn’t sure what that said about her, but she didn’t care that he was getting his ass kicked and she was sure he probably deserved it. She also knew that as soon as they were finished with Frankie, they’d come looking for her. The Sons of Warlock lived by two specific creeds, no snitches and no witnesses. She had one leg out the window when she heard Frankie say, “Okay! Okay! It’s in the freezer in the bowl marked, “Chili.” She slid out the window as heavy feet headed for the kitchen and at that point she realized she didn’t care how any of this turned out as long as she wasn’t around to see it. She got down low and almost crawled off the porch and once she hit the soft dirt that surrounded the little shack she started running. She was almost to the barn when she heard the gunshot that ended Frankie’s life. She didn’t stop running until she made it to the barn where her car was. She was supposed to be at work today. She’d come back after Frankie left for the club and hid the car in the barn, just in case. He’d come back early and surprised her, but everything she needed was still there.

She threw open the big double doors and her hands and legs shook as she propped them open. As soon as she jumped in the car she turned the key and fired it up. As soon as she backed out of the barn she saw Tig and Vic coming out of the house in her rear view window. They both had their guns in their hands. Tig aimed his at her car as she slammed it into drive and floored it. The bullet pinged off the rear end. She saw Tig running for his bike before she hit the end of the driveway. Vic would stay and clean up the mess in the house and Tig would be tasked with taking care of her. The only reason she’d gotten a small head start was because like Frankie, they’d thought she was at work. She’d served them both their coffee and pastry at six a.m. and then she’d waited until nine when she knew they’d all be around the table, then she told her boss she was sick and had to go home. If only she’d gotten the hell out of there before Frankie made it back. She’d be halfway to Carson City and her parent’s house by now.

She turned off the dirt road onto the paved one practically on two wheels and headed for the main road. It was about two miles straight ahead. If she could make it that far Tig would back off. The Sons of Warlock’s dabbled in just about every illegal activity available in the small county of White’s Bridge, Nevada. But they kept a low profile and that kept the cops off their doorstep. Tig got off two more shots before she reached the highway. One of them blew out the back window and a spray of glass hit her in the back of the neck and rained down in her lap. She was shaking all over but she kept her focus and as soon as her tires hit the I-15 she knew that he would back off and leave her alone…for now. She wasn’t under any illusions that they wouldn’t keep looking for her…and when they found her she was going to die, without any witnesses.

  Chapter 2

Levi didn’t know if Red Bull or Vicious or any of the other guys in the club knew where she was from but luckily her parents had both recently retired and moved from the house that she’d grown up in right outside of Las Vegas near Henderson. They bought a small condo in Carson City and Levi didn’t think the club would know where to find them. But, she didn’t plan on staying there for long. She had called her father the day before. It was the first time she’d spoken to either of her parents in over two years. She’d changed her phone number, but her mother still sent her a weekly email and told her everything they were up to and how much they loved her and wished she would come home. It was the only way she knew they had moved. As they talked her dad actually cried and it broke her heart. She told him she was leaving her boyfriend and she needed some money so that she could get a fresh start somewhere and find a job. He had a lot of questions that she promised she would answer when she saw him, but she also made sure that he understood she wasn’t going to have much time. She wasn’t coming home for a visit.

Her dad agreed to withdraw a few thousand dollars in cash but he was adamant that he wouldn’t give it to her unless she told them what was going on. Now she’d have even more to tell and less time to do it. She missed her parents so much that it caused a physical pain in her chest. But she had to get in and out of there quickly before they got drawn into this mess she’d gotten herself into. They’d been through too much already…way too much.

Levi was fourteen when her brother died. It was a devastating time for the whole family but where Will was gone, Levi was the one left behind to drown in the aftermath. Will had been five years her senior and her hero for as long as she could remember. They got along well almost all the time, maybe because of the age difference. She missed him terribly but that didn’t negate the fact that she also resented him for leaving and for driving their parents crazy.

Levi was suddenly living in a prison after Will died. Her parents watched everything she did, constantly worried that she’d get hurt or worse and they’d end up childless. Levi was a good girl for a while. She hurt for her parents and she didn’t want to disappoint them. But adolescent hormones can’t be denied forever and by the time she was seventeen she’d started staying out all night, dabbling in drugs and sex and doing whatever else she could think of to shock and rebel. At nineteen she left home and got a job in a little hole in the wall diner in White’s Bridge. The town was about a hundred miles away from her home in Vegas, in the middle of nowhere and sparsely populated. She ended up there because that’s how far she got before her car ran out of gas and she ran out of money. She stayed because she met some really good people like her best friend Cami who was like the sister she never had. The owners of the diner, a married couple named Maude and Neil was also really good to her. She worked hard and played hard for the first two years she was there…and when she was twenty-three, Frankie walked into the diner, and into her life, and with him he brought a whole world of chaos.

Levi’s job and her friends became even more important as things got worse with Frankie. They were the only ones that really knew the real woman behind the mask she wore and they knew that the ice queen she had become was not really her. She’d shown up at the diner with no money, a beaten down car and a wounded soul and even then they could see the fire in her eyes. She wanted to experience life and taste everything at least once. The young woman she turned into two years later after moving in with Frankie, was moody, sarcastic and al
l too often, as high as a kite. Neil tried to talk to her about it but she assured him she was fine. Maude never said much but Levi could see the disappointment in the older woman’s eyes. Cami on the other hand knew everything but unfortunately she was powerless to change it. Cami had her own problems. She came from a town called Death Falls about thirty miles out of Vegas. It was a place Levi had heard plenty about when she was growing up and had been warned by her parents more than once to stay away from. It was a rough town ran by a rough MC club called the Black Skulls. Levi had thought about stopping there the day she fled her parent’s house and her life as an inmate there, but at the time she’d wanted to be far away from home and thirty miles didn’t seem far enough.

Cami’s mother was what they called a ‘club girl’ and something Cami had grown up despising. She listened to her mother talk about how someday she was going to be someone’s ‘old lady,’ all the time, like that was a goal worth achieving. Cami went to White’s Bridge to work with her Uncle Neil and Aunt Maude not long before Levi got there. They became fast friends and when Levi first started seeing Frankie, Cami had tried to warn her. She’d seen her mother go through one man after the other like Frankie and get nothing for her trouble other than bumps, bruises and heartache. Levi hadn’t listened to her but Cami had stuck by her and never once said ‘I told you so.’ Levi was going to miss her best friend most of all.

It was a nine-hour drive from White’s Bridge to Carson City and Levi tried hard to crank up the radio loud and drown out her thoughts. Unfortunately, it didn’t work. Her thoughts were racing as she tried to figure out how she’d gotten herself into this mess and where she was going to go from here. She didn’t have to search too hard for how she ended up here. She’d run away from home, looking for a life and ended up bored to tears in a little town where the only excitement happened at the biker bar and club that sat just on the outskirts of it. She could vividly remember the day that she’d walked out of the back of the restaurant and saw them. She’d seen them drive by and heard the loud whine of their hogs when she was in bed late at night…but that day was the first time she’d laid eyes on Sons of Warlocks up close and damn if they weren’t some of the hottest men she’d ever laid eyes on.
