by Samantha Clarke

“I don’t want an explanation, I’m just… Hurt. You made it sound as though you actually wanted to have something to do with me. Like you actually wanted to be a part of my life. But you won’t return my aunt’s calls, and you didn’t even invite me to this big important family dinner. Aunt Mel was right to keep me from you. I’m sorry I let you fool me, Samuel. I should have known better. You’re a shit father to Jaden, and a fucking coward for not coming with us to the brood’s lair. I don’t know why I had such high expectations from you. But thanks for disappointing me.” Samantha whispered. She turned away.

“I just didn’t know how to tell my parents I have a seventeen year old daughter that they don’t know about.” Samuel stammered, taking a couple steps towards Samantha, “Please, come in and sit. We can all talk about this together. And call me dad…”

“You man up and tell them on your own. I’m not going to call you dad, I’m sorry. Not unless you can prove to me that you actually want to be a dad. To both me and Jay. Maybe I will talk to you later, tell Jaden I said bye.” She went out the front door, slamming it behind her. She stormed all the way down the front steps, and got into the passenger seat of Riley’s car. He just looked at her.

  “What happened?” He asked slowly.

Samantha just shook her head, “Don’t worry about it.” She looked at Riley, “Let’s just go. If this visit with Danny goes well, Aunt Mel is going to talk to a social worker to arrange home visits.”

Riley pulled away from Jaden’s house. “So… How do you feel about Melody adopting?”

“She’s just fostering. And I think it’s great.” Samantha responded as a matter-of-factly. Riley didn’t say anything in response, he just turned his radio on. The song playing was slow and sad and he gripped his steering wheel tight, averting his eyes from Samantha. She frowned and looked out her window.

Riley stopped at the stop sign at the top of her street. Kedar was outside with Melody, loading her wheelchair into his truck. Riley looked at Samantha, “I need to know what’s going on with us.”

“Nothing is Riley, you know that.” She pursed her lips in aggravation.

“I thought we were just taking a break. All you said was you needed time and space, and we never actually talked about our feelings and where our relationship was.”

“Riley, I broke up with you. It wasn’t just a break. I very clearly ended the relationship. There’s nothing to talk about”

Riley lightly touched Samantha’s hand with his fingertips, “Of course there is… Samantha, I still love you.”

“Riley, stop it. You’re just making yourself look like a fool…” She said as she moved her hand away from his.

“I just need to know, Runt…”

“What do you need to know, Riley?” Samantha snapped becoming aggravated. Riley went to touch her hand once again but she pulled it away from him, snarling. She crossed her arms across her chest.

“If you still love me too…” He whispered, lightly caressing her cheek with the back of his hand.
