Enzo: Adamo Bodyguards Book 3 Page 7

by Madison, Mia

  “Something’s wrong with Jordan.”

I frown, even as an icy needle of fear stabs my heart. “What do you mean, wrong with him? Physically?”

“No. He’s been worrying about something for weeks now. I asked him what, and he said it had to do with his fund.

“But I’m not sure I believe him. He never worries about the fund; his instincts are flawless.”

“Katie. I don’t mean to pry. But is everything okay in … well … in the bedroom?”

She lets out a watery laugh. “I suppose it depends on your definition of okay. Jordan’s such a gentleman, he’s barely even kissed me.”

“Oh, honey. He is pretty cerebral; maybe he hasn’t — you know. Ever. And he’s probably been terrified of getting you pregnant before the wedding and disappointing our parents.”

“Probably.” She delicately dabs away a tear at the corner of her eye with the tissue she’s holding. “I’m sure I’m just being a silly goose and everything is fine. I wish he’d confide in me, but I suppose that has to be learned.”

I’m about to respond when the door opens. Daniel’s standing there with an envelope in his hand, his expression as serious as I’ve ever seen it. “This was just delivered to the church.”

The envelope has Katie’s name on it. She doesn’t try to move away while she opens it, so I shamelessly read over her shoulder as she draws out the card and reads what’s written inside.

I’m sorry, Katie. I love you, but I can’t do this. I’ve tried. Please forgive me. —J

Katie breaks down sobbing. Daniel looks as stricken as I feel, and then fury flashes in his eyes. I keep my arms around Katie, but my eyes on my brother-in-law, helpless to know what to do or say.

I’m not sure how much time passes before other people come. My parents, and then Katie’s; and then Enzo’s there, and I go into his arms and cling. He crushes me against him, kissing my hair.

“No. No.” Katie’s pulling away from her mother. “I just — I need to be alone.”

That’s when Daniel quietly takes control. “Overnight bag,” he says to me, and I grab it from the corner where it’s been stashed and hand it to him.

He puts his arm around Katie. “Come on. I’ve got you. Let’s get out of here.”

She lets him lead her away, ignoring the protests of her parents, and I lean against Enzo again. “Oh, god.”

“We’ll find him,” he says quietly. “Whatever this is, we’ll sort it. She’s not alone.”

“No, she’s not.” We go out, past shocked faces. “Enzo.”

  “Yeah, babe.”

“I’m so glad I have you.”

“Same.” He tilts my chin up. “You know I’ll never do that, right? Leave you.”

I smile at him through my tears. “Me either. Leave, I mean.”

  “I love you, Lucy.”

I go up on my toes, and he kisses me gently. “I love you, Enzo.” My heart is full of worry, but also boundless gratitude. “Let’s go home.”
