  Ronald Madison and one of his dachshunds. While the rest of his family evacuated before Katrina struck New Orleans, Ronald and his brother Lance stayed behind to care for Ronald's beloved pets, Bobbi and Sushi.

  Ronald Madison at home. Ronald was killed by NOPD officers while crossing the Danziger Bridge between his brother's dental office and his mother's house.

  Lance Madison in 2006, after state charges were filed against NOPD officers in the shootings.

  Jose Holmes, then nineteen, survived being shot four times by police on the Danziger Bridge. Holmes was later accused of the attempted murder of seven NOPD officers.
