Terms and systems
24-hour clocks
In real life, military time is also kept with a 24-hour clock. There is one major difference between the time keeping in real life and Lanaria; instead of 0:00 hours (which is midnight) in Lanaria it is the 24th hour. Everything else in the 24-hour time-keeping system is the same though.
Bathroom
In Lanaria, the place a person bathes is called a bathroom. The place a person excretes is called a privy.
Mastery
Short for “Mastery of the combat arts.”
It is the Legion standard used for training and judging Martial prowess. The system of mastery is divided into rungs, and tiers. Rungs are the basis of the Mastery, and as such must be learned first. There are ten rungs that must be learned to qualify for the first tier of Mastery. The arts taught include hand to hand, short and long swords, dagger, bow, crossbow, staff, cudgel, spear, two-weapon technique, weapon and shield technique. All of these weapons are required to be understood and practiced to a minimum level to advance. There are ten tiers of Mastery, but there are currently only two people in the realm who hold a documented tenth tier mastery.
Reliquary gland (rel-i-quar-ee)
A gland present in people, it is located where the brain connects with the spinal cord. Spirits are connected to this gland. It has been noted in anatomical studies that the size of the gland appears to be directly related to the Magikal ability of the person. In persons without the sight, it is the size of a BB. In a person with a sight age of 7, it is the size of a small coin.
Currency Table
1 copper coin is the size of an American penny.
A person could buy a 1/2 pint of ale or a pastry
1 copper mark = 5 copper coins
One copper mark is the size of an American quarter
1 silver coin = 10 copper marks
2 silver to go from Nigel's home to Dothranan manor by carriage
1 silver mark = 10 silver coins
A night with an awesome whore
1 gold coin = 5 silver marks
1 gold coin would buy an average healthy slave of breeding age
1 gold mark = 10 gold coins
1 Gold crown = 10 Gold Marks
A gold crown is 3 inches in diameter, and nearly a 1/2 inch thick. One would pay for 2 years of tuition and dorm rights at an Academy with two meals a day included.
Magikal Basics
All people with the sight can take a spirit without using any power to do so: this is an innate ability granted by the sight. Physical contact with the skin over the Reliquary gland is required.
Minor powers
120 uses with one spirit for a person with a sight age of 10. Examples include:
-Truth-seer
-Sensory extension/enhancement
-Venom detection
-Light
-Mind-touch
-Voice Amplification
-Blood copy
-Venom seeker
-Opening a warded door with the proper key
Median powers
20 uses for one spirit for a person with a sight age of 10.
(The latest one can use a median power is a sight age of 15)
-Physical enhancement (strength or speed)
-Using a stone of Liligoth to transport oneself
-Apportation (within line of sight)
-Creating silence
-Voice of power
-Heart Brand
-Anti-eavesdropping
Major powers
5 uses for one spirit with a sight age of 10
(The latest one can use a major power is sight age of 12)
-Apportation (with no line of sight, or with line of sight while moving another)
-30 seconds of flight
-Using a stone of Liligoth to take yourself and another
Greater Powers
(cannot be used at a sight age of 10: sight age of 8 is the latest one can use a greater power)
-Apportation (with no line of sight while moving another)
-Creating a storm
-Using a stone of Liligoth to take 2 with you
*Apportation examples represent short range jumps. The power requirement will increase for longer distances.
Many things can be considered to be any of the ranks depending on the amount of power used. These are referred to as “Variable” powers. Examples include:
-Healing
-Magikal attacks
-Magikal shields
-Magikal wards/breaking said wards
A Greater power is the most powerful ability that can be naturally manifested. It can only be enhanced after that point by an affinity and/or a Wizard's Staff
Most people have an affinity for a certain type of Magik. Magik cast from the element in question will be more potent. The elements include:
Fire
Lightning
Water
Wind
Earth
Spirit
Types of Magik include:
Invocation (changing yourself)<
br />
Evocation (changing something outside of yourself)
Enchantment (the crafting of talismans)
Enchantments must be set in minerals to hold the power. Stone, metal, teeth, or bones are commonly used.
Disorders or contamination of the blood cannot be healed by Magik. The contaminant cannot be separated from the substance of the blood.
Not many above the sight age of 8 gain their staves
-They will be accepted, but are discouraged
Between sight ages of 9-12 are encouraged to be enchanters. This is a two year degree.
13 or older are discouraged from training but will be allowed if they can pay.
The Wizard's staff both stores and amplifies power.
It stores 1 spirit's worth of energy, and recharges under moonlight.
About the author
I began writing stories when I was 9 years old, mostly as adventures for role-playing games. I tried writing a novel a few times before this, but ended up frustrated trying to write in another person's world.
I am also a reader, with some of my favorite authors being Terry Pratchett, Terry Goodkind, James Clavell, George R.R. Martin, Frank Herbert, Brandon Sanderson, and Jim Butcher.
My favorite form of fiction is Japanese anime and manga: the pull-no-punches manner of storytelling, epic adventures and imaginative stories propel my imagination, and make me laugh much harder than most other types of entertainment.
I was offered a scholarship at Pathfinder school when I was in the 3rd grade due to my test scores. My family was very poor, and I dropped out of High School in the 8th grade, so I could work full-time. I continued my own education, reading and researching many subjects vigorously without the restraints of the public school system.
I wasted about 20 years of my life with severe substance abuse and dwelling in deep depression. There are large holes in my mind and memory created by this my ideas rattle around in.
My other interests include martial arts, assembling custom computers, and pretty women.
