“Well, alright then,” Rylan laughed.
“That kid is something special. That’s for sure.”
Thrett stared down the hallway with a wistful look on his face. Rylan’s heart swelled. It was beautiful to see how attached Thrett was to his long-lost son already. In her heart she knew that bond would only strengthen with time, but they still had things to discuss.
Turning to face him, she clasped her hands in her lap until her knuckles turned white. This was it, the moment where her life would change forever, and she had no idea whether it would be for the better or worse. All she knew was that she couldn’t put it off any longer. Time to rip off the Band-Aid.
“So…what about us?” She chewed on her lip nervously.
His brow crinkled and a flicker of amusement danced in his warm hazel eyes. “What about us?”
With the ice broken, she let out a pensive huff. “Don’t play dumb, Thrett. You know what I mean. Look, I’m thrilled you want to be a part of Trystin’s life. I want that for both of you. But I’m concerned you might have a hard time giving up your, um, lifestyle.”
He snorted and gave her a bemused look. “You mean my deep pathological need to sleep around?”
“Something like that,” she admitted, blushing.
Thrett closed the gap between them and wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close. Electricity snapped between them and tears sprang to Rylan’s eyes over the connection she felt with him. For eight long years she’d lived without him and for eight long years she’d lived with a hole in her soul she hadn’t even known was there. Until he returned to her. Then, despite her hesitation, everything fell into place like it was meant to be.
He cupped her cheek, the light touch sending lightning bolts straight to her most sensitive parts. “That life is behind me now, Rylan. You have to know that.”
As much as she wanted it to be true, she didn’t want him staying with her just because of Trystin. “Are you sure? I’m giving you an out, Thrett.”
“I don’t want it,” he said fiercely. “You and Trystin are all I need now, all I want. You got away from me once. Never again, my love.”
Taking her face in his hands, he kissed away the tear that had slipped down her cheek. “Don’t you get it, Rylan? We’ve been waiting for each other this whole time. I just never realized it. But fate finally brought us back together.”
He leaned in and kissed her—hard. The passion that flowed between them was brighter than the firelight. Tingles and spirals of warmth careened through her whole body. When he finally pulled back, there was a soft adoration in his eyes. He stroked her cheek, and she felt like the only woman in the world.
“We’re fated to be together, my love,” he murmured, pressing his forehead to hers. “And now that I’ve found you again, I will never let you go.”
