He walked with her to the stairs. “I’m glad you’re staying.”

He sounded pleased with her decision but she couldn’t decide why. “We’ll need a bottle.”

  “Does he really need one?”

“If he wakes while I change him, he will.”

Tony detoured to the kitchen and returned with a partly filled bottle. “Here you go.” He led the way upstairs.

In the nursery Lauren changed Jamie. He whimpered a bit but returned to sleep when she fed him some of the milk.

On their way out of the room Tony flipped a switch. “We can hear him no matter where we are.”

Lauren turned toward the back stairs. “I know you want to talk about custody. I’m not ready. I’ll go home. When he wakes, call me. I’ll come for him. It’s only a ten-minute trip.”

Tony grasped her shoulders. “Don’t leave yet. There’s something I want to show you. I’ve a question for you.”

He stood so close she felt the warmth of his body. The aromas of his aftershave and the scent particular to him brought tears to her eyes. She wanted to throw herself into his arms and beg him to let her stay with him forever. She couldn’t. She had goals to reach. She nodded. “I’ll stay a bit.”

Tony clasped her hand. “Close your eyes.”

His request puzzled her but she did. He slid his arm around her waist. They walked and halted when he opened a door and then another. Lauren opened her eyes and frowned.

A bathroom. Why? The Jacuzzi looked tempting and the large shower reminded her of the night they’d first made love. She wanted to ask why here and why now.

Tony opened the linen closet door. She stared at the row of boxes and couldn’t stop laughing. “What on earth?”

“Remember what I said before you pulled the plug on you and me. Next time the condoms are on me.” He turned her to face him. “I’ve missed you more than I thought possible.” He pulled her close.

The feel of his erection against her belly sent those remembered currents of desire flooding her core. “Why?”

“To make sure there are enough.” He brushed her mouth with his and thrust his tongue over her lips.

“What are you planning? An orgy?”

“A never ending seduction.” He kissed her again.

Desire roared like a wildfire setting every atom of her body from warm to incandescent. Resisting seemed impossible.

“Will you?” He snagged one of the boxes.

How could she say no yet how could she agree? Accepting could lead to a broken heart?

  * * *

Tony drew a deep breath and prayed he wouldn’t blow this chance to make her his. On the day she’d driven away from the city apartment he had believed there couldn’t be a chance for their affair to continue. He hadn’t known he would want her forever. He set the box of condoms on the bedside stand. “I want and I need you in my life.”

  Her eyes widened. “But…”

He brushed a finger over her lips. “Let me tell you how I feel. I want you to finish your education and find a job. I want to help you achieve your goals.” He touched the box. “This will help insure there won’t be any baby but Jamie until you’re ready. Marry me.”

Tears glistened in her eyes. “Why?”

Though he hoped she could read the answer in his gaze his arms tightened around her. “I want the life Jim had with Carrie. I don’t want to live my father’s way any longer. Help me make a home for Jamie. Teach me how to love.”

She tilted her head and stared into his eyes. “Yes.”

He rained kisses on her face. “Soon.”

“How about during the Christmas break?”

Tony laughed. “Let’s seal the bargain.”

  “With a handshake?”

“With full body contact.” He lifted her into his arms and placed her on the bed.

Lauren slid to her feet. She pressed her lips to his. His tongue flowed into her mouth. Tongues explored until they became breathless. The promise beyond the kiss urged them to rush. Not this time. He wanted to savor every moment.

Tony groaned. The slow approach wasn’t working. He broke the kiss and stepped back.

Lauren met his gaze. “Is something wrong?”

“Everything’s right. My head wants slow but my body urges full speed ahead.”

“I like fast.” She pulled her sweater over her head and opened her bra. “Your turn.”

Tony removed his shirt. When her hands skimmed over his chest he growled. She licked the spot on his neck that drive him wild and sent him to kick off his shoes. He dragged his slacks over his hips and faced her nude body. “I’ve waited for this day for years?”

  “How so?”

“At the wedding, even with your streaked hair and piercings, one look and I wanted you.”

“Why did you act like I was to be avoided?”

Tony stared at the floor. “Jim noticed. He warned me off. I’m glad I listened. The man I was back then would have taken all you offered and walked away.”

She tapped his hand. “I felt the same. I was a mess back then. I had to grow up.” She stepped close enough to brush her body against his.

When Tony reached for a condom she snatched the packet from his hand. “Allow me, my love.”

He brushed her lips with his. “For now and forever.”
