The Matriarch then landed before me. She placed her head to the ground, and Sakril joined again landing on her nose. I heard her inner muffled ‘dawg gone flea,’ and I laughed.

“I am saying this for all humans and species alike,” Sakril said aloud. It seemed all at once he could speak a thousand tongues. Every one of the parties drew close to us to listen in.

“Turn to Maddie for guidance. Protect our eggs, for the clutch will hatch next year. There’s a war coming, but not just from the Port. It is a war between good and evil on Puatera. It’s been coming since the day I was stolen from my mother. Hear this. We will return. We will bring back the forces to wipe this world clean of everything in our wake if you do not succeed.”

I placed my hand on my chest. “Sakril, you have my word. We will not let you or the Clan down. Go, go home and come back to fight. We will be waiting. As will your children.”

Sakril lowered his head to me, then with one quick flash of power and energy, he was gone with the matriarch behind him.

Do not let us down, he reiterated, but more so, do not let yourself down, Maddie. You’re stronger than you believe.

I swallowed, watching as the darkened skies with a thousand wings shifted towards home. The tremors as the last remaining Tromoal joined their brethren to leave us rocked my soul. Bellows of sorrow and joy filled my ears. Their mothers were scared to leave, but yet so hopeful for their future. The beating of their wings faded as did the voices inside my mind. The sun finally started to brighten our horizon, and my thoughts turned to the future.
