“These, these are my brother's glasses. He's blind as a bat without them. God, I hope that he's okay. I don't know what I'll do if they're... If they're not around here somewhere.” I said, still unable to resign myself to the fact that they might be dead.

“Well, if you're up to it I think we'll be able to cover more ground if we split up.”

I think he could see my hesitation, but he continued on.

“Look, I'll give you a flare gun, and if anything happens you just shoot it off and I'll be running. I don't think the guard has worked it's way this far yet, but all the same, it should help keep you safe.”

“Okay. Whew. I think I'll be okay splitting up. You're sure that you'll come for me if something happens?” I asked.

“I'll be there quicker than you can count to one hundred.”

“A lot can happen between one and one hundred”

“Look, I think you can handle yourself out here if you need to. But if you really want to waste time arguing, we can stick together. We just have a hell of a lot better chance of finding something if we split up.”

“Alright, I've got this. Just give me the damn flare gun.”

After that Adam headed east and I went west. I got about half a mile away and I hadn't found anything. I was still nervous about being out in the forest alone, and since I wasn't having much luck I decided to double back and try to find Adam. I got lost on my way back though, and ended up deep in the woods again. I thought about using the flare gun, but talked myself out of it. I wasn't in any danger, and I figured that I should save it in case I came across something that could hurt me. While I was trying to get my bearings again first I heard one familiar voice, then another. It was the man in the suit. And then I saw whom the second voice belonged to. Detective Adam Parker. I thought about bolting in the opposite direction, but something kept me glued to the spot I was in. I crept up closer to them so I could better hear what they were saying.

“She knows that something isn't right. She wants to find her brothers.” Adam said.

“We want to find them too. It seems like they have some sort of connection to the crash. We were expecting some...Difficulties with what was going to be out at the actual crash site, but we weren't expecting two more of them to already be out here incognito.”, the suit said.

“Do you think she knows about them yet?” Adam asked.

“If she did, she wouldn't want to find them. She doesn't suspect that you're working with us does she?” , the suit asked.

“No, she thinks I'm an honest working stiff”

“Good, she's the only link we have right now. We can't have her going off and fucking this whole thing up.”

“Should I take her to the boss then?”

“No. She'll be more use to us here, as bait. She might not know about her stepbrothers yet, but they know about her, and they'll be looking for her. Meet up with her again, keep her occupied, and when the time comes we'll use her to finally get somewhere with this mess.”

“Alright, I'll give her another half hour to play detective then I'll take her back to my place. She's a hot young thing. Who knows, I might even be able to have a little bit of fun with her in the meantime.”

I couldn't believe that Adam was working for them. At least I knew that Tommy and Walter were still out there somewhere. I didn't know what to do though, should I go back and play along with Adam? The longer I spent with him, the better chance that they would use me to get at Walt and Tom. I spent a little while lost in my head trying to work out everything that they said, and how to get away. I started walking away as quickly as I could when I came across a clearing in the forest. There was a ranger's station and a patrol vehicle still parked in front it. I went up and looked around to see what I could work with.

The keys weren't in the SUV. It didn't look like anyone was inside the station though, so I decided to push my luck and see if there was anything I could use inside. It looked like whoever was in here last left in a hurry. Papers were scattered across the floor, and bullet casings were littered among the detritus. As I looked closer I saw what looked like claw marks across one of the walls. Some sort of fight had taken place, but from the looks of things it wasn't recently. As I continued looking I heard something moving around inside of the bathroom.

As I tried to find something to defend myself with I found a gun on the ground. There were only a few bullets left in it, but it was better than nothing. I steeled myself for whatever was about to come, held the gun in one shaking hand and opened the bathroom door. As I opened the door the stench of rot assaulted my nostrils, and a raccoon shot out, looking angry that it's meal was interrupted. The corpse of a ranger lay waiting for me after that. Its chest was caved in looking like something massive had struck it with great force. There were claw marks running up and down the body, and it didn't look like he was able to put up much of a fight.

I vomited at the sight of it, but the thought of being captured by Adam pushed me on. I cautiously stepped towards the body to try and find the keys to the SUV. I was terrified as I searched his pockets, but I was rewarded for my troubles. He had a couple hundred dollars in his wallet, an extra magazine for the gun I had found, and most importantly the keys to the SUV.

I left the building without looking back, trying to forget the horrible scene that unfolded. I had cash, a gun, and a vehicle, but I still had Adam looking for me. I decided to backtrack into the forest. When I had walked for about twenty minutes I pointed the flare gun straight into the sky and fired. I left a few articles of clothing so it looked like there was a struggle, and started running back to the station.

There were a few times that I thought they were closing in on me, but I made it back to the car without incident. After that I sped out of the forest hoping that Tom and Walt would be able to forgive me for running away on them. I drove for the next day and a half careful to stay off the major highways, and only stopping for gas and food. I constantly checked my rear view mirror to see if anyone was following, but no one ever did. When it looked like I had finally gotten far enough away I let my guard down. I found a rest station, pulled in and cried myself to sleep.

I spent the next few months drifting from town to town. I'd park a few miles out of town, find a few odd jobs to make some cash and move on. I kept on watching the news hoping to hear something about what had happened, but nothing ever appeared. It was almost like it never happened. I eventually came upon a sleepy town in Texas that seemed like might be safe enough to stay for a few weeks in. A few weeks turned into a few months, and when no one came looking for me I decided to set up a base of operations there and try to figure out what to do next. I got tired of doing menial jobs pretty quickly. One night while searching for answers on a random conspiracy theory forum I came upon the perfect solution. I saw an ad looking for writers for a website called Truthseekers.com, and I decided to check it out. It wasn't well known, and there wasn't much acclaim to be found working for them. What they did have was an eccentric rich owner that wanted to uncover each and every ounce of corruption in the government.

He was a bit of a crackpot, but he had a good heart. I used my experiences from the Summer and my what I had learned getting my degree in journalism to snoop out as many stories as I could. It also served as a front for me to search for my brothers. I found myself really enjoying the work, whether it was trying to find bigfoot or doing an expose on a corrupt local politician. It wasn't much, but I had something to live for again.

  Chapter four

  Present day

Truth seeking and growing up again.

Three years have passed since I started looking for the truth. There have been times where I almost glimpsed what was going on behind the curtains, but mostly I've just worked with the fringe societies and conspiracy nuts. I've never given up trying to find Walt and Tom, but I haven't found anything since that summer. That's why I'm so excited about this crash. Everything about it feels just like what happened during our last camping trip together. I don't
know what to expect, but I know that this time I won't turn back.

I know that if I stay on the highway that there is no way that I'll get there first, so I turn onto the first dirt road I find and start making a beeline towards the crash site. Harvest season was a few weeks back, so all the fields are empty, and tonight they are mine. I push the bike as hard as it can be pushed, thinking about the answers I might finally get. I've caught up with the SUV now, it's tail lights trailing ahead of my. I wonder if Adam or the suits are in there again. No time for thinking stuff like that. All I need to think about right now are the eerily familiar pulsing lights in the distance getting closer.

I've completely overtaken the SUV now. It looks like I'll be at the scene in just a few minutes now. I know that I should be terrified, but all I can feel is excitement. Adrenaline roaring through me as I bump and bounce across field after field. The stars over head watch over me and fill me with a sense of calm that I haven't truly felt since Tommy kissed me. Waves of deja vu come washing over me, and as I start to get lost in the night the lights pull into focus and I know that I've arrived.

At first it's hard to see what's happening. The lights are all just so damn bright. Eventually my eyes adjust to the scene, and what is in front of me is nothing short of amazing. A huge machine is partially embedded in the ground. It didn't crash into the ground, the sheer size of the machine was what created the impact. It's weird though, even with the it's size and all the lights buzzing around the outside of the craft there it isn't making any noise. The silence and the light have me so awestruck that at first I don't even notice as two men park and step out of their vehicle and train their gunsights on me.

“Alice Stevens. It's so nice to see you again. You know, we thought you had died out there in the forest for quite some time. We found out that you escaped of course, but you just didn't seem important enough to chase. I'm glad that I decided to keep tabs on anyway. Everyone else doubted me, but sure enough you led us right to another ship.”, Adam said no longer hiding behind a country accent or false niceties. “I bet you still don't even know what you've hit on. I'm guessing that you don't even know what your dear stepbrothers actually are. I suppose there is no reason hiding it from you anymore, after this we're going to have to kill you after all. No hard feelings, it's just business.”, he said smugly. “They're aliens of course. Half-bloods, but aliens all the same. Your stepfather was part of an advance scouting group. He was about to head back and report when he fell in love with your mother. Can you believe that bastard let us kill him before he even had a chance to tell his sons about their heritage?”

As Adam was telling me all about years of government cover ups, and different types of tech that they had stolen over the years a hatch opened silently behind him.

“They probably wouldn't have ever figured out that they had Praxar blood running in their veins if you three wouldn't have been stupid enough to go and investigate the landing in the woods. But alas you all did, and here we are. We've been trying to catch them ever since. They've checked in on you a few times now, but every time we got close they ran away again.” Adam continued.

I noticed a figure step out of the ship then, and slide one finger over his crooked grin to shush me as he approached the man in the suit behind Adam.

“I suppose I should give them an incentive to come out now. I just wanted you to know what you had gotten yourself into before you died. It's really nothing personal, we just want to study them and find out what happens when human and Praxar DNA mixes.” Adam said as he stepped towards me.

Tommy made it to the suit and twisted his neck with a sickening crunch as Adam reached me and stuck the barrel of his gun against my temple.

“So nice of you to join us Tommy, or is it Walter, it's so hard to tell the two of you apart. I don't if it's because you're twins, or if it's that filthy Praxar blood. But here I go prattling on again, I don't care who you are. All I need is for you to surrender. I'd hate to have to kill this pretty little thing. The original plan was to catch one of you, and then kill her. But I think I might just have some fun with her first.” Adam said as he eyed me lasciviously.

“You don't have to do this.” Tommy said struggling to contain his anger. “Let her go and I'll come along peacefully.”

“NO! Just run. I don't care what happens to me, I just needed to know that you were safe.”, I managed to get out before Adam slapped me.

The next ten seconds were a blur, Tommy shot forward heading directly for us. In the confusion Adam tried to shoot at Tommy. And then two shots cracked out. He bellowed as the bullets penetrated him. He slumped forward, and Adam died.

I had kept the gun from the ranger's station all those years ago, and decided to get good with it. It was one of the reminders I kept to keep me going. To remind me of whom I lost.

Tommy looked bewildered, but okay. He still looked like Tommy, but something was different, he was taller. Taller, and his skin had taken on a light blue hue. I didn't care about the changes he'd undergone, or what that might mean. All I cared about was running into his arms, blue or otherwise. I was so excited that I almost didn't notice Walter following close behind him.

“What the hell! Do you know how long I've been looking for you two? I had almost convinced myself that you had never even existed.”, I said as tears of joy started to form in my eyes.

“Yeah... We didn't know how to tell you. We only found what we were when that ship crashed in the forest. It's a lot to take in. And when you throw in crazy agents chasing you down to take you apart and analyze your body, it makes it pretty hard to stop by and visit. We thought it would be better for you if we stayed out of your life.” Tommy said.

“Besides, do you know how hard it is to save someone when your body is violently mutating?”, Walter piped in. “I barely even knew who I was, but I knew you were there and in danger, so I drug you off to safety before I ran back to Tommy to finish...Changing. I had to dodge all kinds of agents on my way back... I couldn't let you just fall right back into their hands.”

I was still reeling, but seeing the two of them was worth it. I was dumbstruck, and didn't know where to go from here.

“I know that you probably have all sorts of questions, but for now why don't you hop in so we can get the hell away from here before more people show up. I'll explain everything once we get out of here, and after that I can drop you off anywhere that you want. Adam was the last person that knew about you, so you'll be free to live wherever and however you want after this.”, Tommy said.

  Chapter five

Questions answered, and new love kindled.

I took his advice and boarded the alien craft. Nothing inside looked or behaved as I thought it would. There was no trace of any metal. Everything seemed to be made out of hardened light of every color. There weren't any doors or corridors, the ship just seemed to move around us as we walked, making a pathway to wherever the twins were leading me. We finally reached something that looked like it might be a control room, and before I knew it we were miles above earth. A screen of sorts popped open and I was able to watch as we kept going up until earth was nothing but a pale blue dot on the horizon. The twins visibly relaxed as we floated among the stars.

“So, once again I would like to say 'What the Hell!'.”

“Well I'm guessing that you've figured out that we aren't quite, well, quite human.” Walt said, looking slightly ashamed.

“Dad was supposed to tell us what we were once we were old enough to understand. But he, well the agents found out what he was, and they killed him before he had the chance. We were the first of our kind. It was theoretically possible for humans and Praxar to conceive a child, but Dad was the first to volunteer to live as a human full time and test it out. It was a test to see if our races could one day live together, and create more genetic diversity. The Praxar aren't a warring race, but they had a strict caste system that, over generations, diminished their gene pool. Eventually they realized the error of their ways, but it was too lat
e. Sickness raged throughout the planet, and they had to do something drastic to save their species. They went across the galaxy searching for another species that was similar enough genetically to reproduce, but different enough to create more diversity. After years of searching they found earth, they tried to reach out to various governments to try and broker some sort of deal but to no avail. So they eventually sent Dad in as a covert agent, and nine months later we were born.” Tommy explained.

“And then once nobody had heard from Dad in a long time they assumed the worst and came looking for us. We moved around so much that they hard time doing that though. The only place we ever consistently visited was our camping spot. So after they found us the tried to do a quick and dirty rescue mission.” Walt finished.

“Wait, but why do you look different now?”, I asked.

“Well, when we came in contact with the other praxari they saw that we were in danger. And even though they aren't a vicious species the praxari have one hell of a defense mechanism. If they come into contact with a certain plant from their home world they mutate into a sort of beast. They lose a lot of their higher thinking, but they gain preternatural strength and speed. That's what that second blast was, they coated the area in the spores. The effect wasn't as strong on us, but once the effects wore off we looked like this. It was incredibly weird looking in a mirror and seeing all the changes, but hey I think blue is kind of sexy on us don't you think?”, Tommy said.

I couldn't help but laugh at that and we talked the night away. Everything else fell away and we were three kids coming together again. After a few hours had passed Tommy spoke up again, a resigned look on his face.

“So have you thought about where you want to go now? We can set you up with a new identity, and you can live out the rest of your life in peace”

“I don't want to go anywhere. My only home is in your arms, you and Walt are my closest friends. And before everything came crashing down, I thought we might be something even more than that.”, I said as I moved closer to him.
