“Oh, we were visiting with some acquaintances of Chris’ up north yesterday...” were Sandy’s words as the two women departed, causing Chris to involuntarily smile.

“What’s so funny?” asked Dave as Chris motioned his guest towards the den.

“Women and how they worry,” Chris candidly replied.

“Tell me about it,” stated Dave as Chris tossed him a beer from the fridge at the bar. Although, I have to admit that when I read the paper this morning, I was concerned.”

“Yeah, quite a story,” Chris agreed as they relaxed into a couple of comfortable leather easy chairs. “I spoke to Peterson earlier and he’s quite shocked, poor guy. I’m gonna give him a hand to keep the place running until he gets himself some replacement management.”

“You think this might affect his business?” Dave enquired. “You can’t consider that this was the best kind of free publicity a company can get.”

“I asked Charlie about that,” Chris responded. “He told me that he’s already received calls from a number of larger clients offering help, sympathy and their full support. No, I don’t think that this is gonna hurt him.”

Dave remained quiet for a moment, hesitant to even ask the question. Finally, he mustered up the courage and simply blurted it out.

“Chris, you had no idea that any of this was going on? I mean, I know you were just there for a couple of weeks, but still. Didn’t you notice anything out of the ordinary?”

“Can’t tell you more than you already know,” Chris shrugged nonchalantly. “I was just a consultant.”

The two men fell silent as they turned their attention to the news on the television, first watching a report on the bombing of a farm in Colombia, followed by another from Thailand regarding an explosion at a clothing manufacture and the destruction of a bar known to be a criminal hang-out.
