“This is dreadful, how is it possible that all this happened in front of our eyes and we noticed nothing?” Funny asked.
“Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to distinguish between a human and a shapeshifter, comrade! This case seems to be bigger than us, I have no idea how we will resolve it.”
“So, Father Tero and Stout sacrificed their lives for nothing?” Kirien looked at the corpses with grief and small tears welling up in her eyes.
“I swear to Dermeron that I will not rest until I uncover all those bastards!”
“What will we do now, Master, where are we going?” asked Weridan, biting her lips out of nervousness.
“Let me think a bit about who could help us in this tight situation.”
“Don’t give up hope, said the rabbit in the fox’s mouth as its dragged it into the den,” said Funny.
“What is this hogwash, brother inquisitor?” Fist asked.
“I am merely trying to ease the tension, we are all nervous and baffled. There is always a solution, therefore, there must be one now as well.”
“Larond, you idiot, the situation is a bit more alarming than that, to say the least,” Weridan said.
“If we are accused of high treason, we will not have the time to prove ourselves but will all be slaughtered the moment they find us,” Kirien pointed out.
“Unfortunately this is absolutely true and we don’t have much time to find out what to do!”
Armed soldiers were approaching towards us hastily down the stairs.
“Noan, we must leave now!” Motari yelled.
“I know, damn it!”
“Let’s go to Bishop Burron! Wasn’t it him who mentioned the shapeshifters to you for the first time?”
“It was him, Motari! People, let’s go to the city of Tizland!” I ordered, not having any other options either way.
The mage focused and the air began sizzling from the magic energies, the space split and a flashing gate emerged in front of us.
“Quickly, quickly, everyone inside!” my old friend shouted with a face contorted from all the concentration. He had to mobilize the last of his energies to keep the charm in one piece.
We could do nothing else but cross the gate. I was hopeful that the well informed Bishop would know how to proceed in this desperate situation. How should we fight against this deadly enemy that had sneakily infiltrated our circles? If we fail to find an effective weapon against them, the whole of the north could be under their control, or, even worse, it might have already happened. This would ensue devastating consequences to the civilization of humans and the other races on the whole of Algaron. I uttered a brief prayer to Dermeron.
“Lord, assist your servant and with your tremendous power, smite those that trespass against you! Now and for ever!”
