by Jill Frayne
When Jack goes I stay on the porch, the silence slowly coming in. The trees are at their peak. Even the air is stained yellow. A few leaves start to drift down. I expect an early fall.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
IN GETTING GOING on this book I am grateful to Jan Walter for early encouragement and for the suggestion that I bring a person into the description of landscape.
Love and thanks to Marni Jackson, who has egged so many of us on, a wonderful writer and friend.
Thanks near the end of the writing to Anne McKenzie for lavish feedback and good suggestions, every one of which I took.
I’m very lucky to have landed at Random House. All my thanks to Anne Collins and Susan Roxborough and every person in the place for their kindness and help at every turn and for making this a so much better book.
I am especially grateful to Leon and to Bree, my most important readers, for their generosity in letting me tell my version.
My mother and father taught all four of us to love words and to find comfort in writing. Their influence is the slow-acting wave, the one that started long ago and has been gathering all my life. They still set the standard in every way I can think of.
