The following February, after getting off work, Dez got a package in the mail. She opened it up—a copy of Murder on a Lifeboat.
She opened the front cover and a note fell out.
Dez,
I’m sorry for never calling you back, and for never picking up the phone. By the time I was ready to get you back into my life, you had left for Estancia. It took me a while to track you down.
I wish things between us had gone differently, and I know it’s too late to reconcile anything. But know that being with you was the best three months of my life.
Don’t ask me what I had to do to get another copy of this damn book. Just know that this is a symbol of what we had for those brief weeks. Sometimes I feel like all we did was try to get out of the rain.
I hope you find what you’re looking for.
Love,
Audrey
