‘Gerry Durrell was, to use the modern idiom, Magic,’ said his friend and fellow naturalist Sir David Attenborough. ‘You imbibe it in his books, you feel it in his Zoo, you see it in the eyes of his trainees, and you hear it in even the most restrained tones of zoo directors.’

Gerry founded the Jersey Zoo in 1959 and created the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust in 1963 with the mission of saving species from extinction. (Its name was changed from the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust after his death). The Trust continues his work today, running the Zoo in Jersey to pioneer conservation work, as well as Field Programmes around the world and a Conservation Academy.

Visit the Trust’s website (www.durrell.org) for more on the species that the Durrell Trust has helped preserve – or, better still, visit the Jersey Zoo which also has an exhibit on Gerry’s life (including the original manuscript of My Family and Other Animals). The Trust welcomes support and animal adoptions.
