“Whom?”
“The head of the program…my father. Then he would come in and have his thrills, beating me like I was meant to be.”
“Meant to be?”
I nodded. “Yes. I was born to be his punching bag for everything that went wrong in his life. He never loved me. The hatred in his soul, the blackness in the depths of his eyes…” I gazed up at Michelle. “It’s part of me.”
“Luke…”
She placed her hand on my shoulder as I stared forward. “I would stare at him through the mirror. No matter how much blood I shed or how many fists I took, I wouldn’t turn away because I wanted to show him he couldn’t break me.” I swallowed hard. “Even though I was broken from birth.”
“How did you escape?”
“There’s no escaping. There’s no end to it. It will always be a whisper in my mind.”
“Then tell me how you made it out?”
“He was sent over to infect the States,” Tess said, walking in. Michelle gasped and stepped away from me. “When he refused to finish the job, they sent another in to do it. Gunther Erikkson…”
I leaned forward and dropped my head in my hand, the camera still focused on me. “I need to go home, Michelle,” I whispered between harsh breaths. “I need to see my wife and son…my mum…the rest of my family. I need them.” I glanced up at her. “Please, get me home.”
She knelt in front of me, tears coursing down her pink cheeks. “I can’t even imagine being in your shoes. Let’s go back to your chamber and get you well.” I nodded, wiping away my tears.
