“Aye,” Blaine said. “A Campbell. Naw longer an enemy. Noo an ally.”
“But–”
“It will happen whether ye like it or not, sir. The least ye could do is accept it.” Think of all the benefits of this marriage. It will strengthen the union between our clans. It will ensure peace. Ye will have naw cause to worry about running into Campbells ever again. All we need is yer blessing.”
Wilson turned to his daughter. She was looking at him expectantly.
She really wanted to marry this man. He could see it in her eyes. But she had met him less than a month ago. What would people think?
Does it really matter what people would think? asked a voice in the back his mind. Or does it matter more how yer daughter feels?
“I…I approve.”
Epilogue
The lairds of clans McGregor and Campbell agreed to meet in Argyll to make the union official. Many in Glenstrae and Argyll and the rest of Scotland were shocked, and some were even outraged by this new development, but soon everyone accepted it.
Anne and Hiram became good friends though everyone could see that they had an attraction for each other. As for Blaine, he was to get married to Ness in a few weeks. As the days passed, Ness grew fonder of him and wished the day of the wedding would come much sooner. She loved him dearly and wanted to be with him forever. Without him, her life had little meaning.
And that was why, when asked on her wedding day, if she would take him to be her lawfully wedded husband, for better or for worse,
She said, “I do.”
