Rebecca’s lips pursed briefly, and for a moment she wished they were safely back in Vermont, back in their own bed watching the deer out the window as they did every morning, but then suddenly they were passing through the marble columns of the theater’s portico, into the lesser mêlée of the lobby, and the specter of Charity Lauder’s presence vanished instantly.
Rebecca gazed around her with an awed expression, clutching Marcus’s arm in excitement. One by one the grand names of cinematic giants spilled breathlessly from her lips. ‘Oh, look! Look who’s here!’ she kept whispering in amazement as Marcus smiled down at her with the amused tolerance of a man in love.
Rebecca’s eyes darted busily, drinking in the beautifully gowned women and the dashing, impossibly handsome men, the brilliance of jewels that sparkled on graceful arms and necks, the thoroughly enchanting spectacle of people flocking together in celebration, like glorious birds displaying their plumage.
As her eyes drifted through the crowd, her lower lip tucked in an old expression of uncertainty. She looked from perfect face to perfect face, feeling each and every one of her own glaring imperfections keenly.
As Marcus walked her toward the wall that concealed the staircase to the private boxes, she saw enchantment walking to meet them…a lovely woman
with fairy-tale hair of gold and a serene oval face that seemed to radiate life and light as she moved closer. Her hand rested gracefully on the arm of her escort, and she moved across the floor like a cloud of blue sailing effortlessly on an unseen wind.
And then suddenly the woman stopped and blinked and smiled a little in wondering surprise. Her escort bent his head to hers.
‘Look at her, Becca.’ She felt Marcus’s breath stirring the hair near her ear as she smiled at their dual reflections in the mirrored wall. ‘Look at my beautiful Cinderella.’
