Divided Souls Page 36

by Toby Clements

Throughout the country it must have been an extraordinarily precarious time, with the old chains of feudal loyalty in broken pieces, with nothing much except military might yet to replace them, and so perhaps it was always going to kick off again, as inevitably it does, in book four of this series, in which Thomas and Katherine are to be dragged centre stage once more . . .

Divided Souls has been easier to write than Broken Faith, but it has not been without its attendant frights, and I’d like to thank and name a few people who helped me out and on my way.

First, a leftover thank you to Ingo Hippisley, who took his red pencil to Broken Faith with such shaming acuity that I blotted the whole episode from my mind. Thanks Ingo. Second, as usual I owe a huge debt to the great professor David Allison who has been unstinting in his constructive criticisms, not only of the medical procedures that Katherine has to perform – and on which he is an expert – but on more or less everything else too – about which he also seems to be expert. Thank you so much David. I owe you a huge pint.

I should also like to thank my agent, Jim Gill, who has been fierce and funny, and, again, I would like to thank my editor Selina Walker who has performed another terrific feat of literary chiropractic to get my twisted narrative to stand on its own two feet. I must also thank Richenda Todd for her astonishing attention to detail and amazing ability to spot temporal infelicities. I’d like to thank Darren Bennett for his beautiful maps, and Beth Kruszynskyj for her tireless organisational skills.

More generally I’d like to thank those who are still awaiting their cheques-in-the-post (whom I will have to thank individually and in person so that they never learn the True Horror of the length of the list of my creditors) but whose day will come, I promise . . . and of course I’d especially like to thank those who have borne with me over the last year – particularly Kazza, Martha, Tom and Max. Thank you all.
