She took him deep, flexing her throat muscles. Moaning he allowed her to pull back. She scraped her teeth along his underside. He closed his eyes enjoying the pleasurable pain she delivered
“Pissing off the woman with your dick in her mouth.”
He snorted. “You finally find your fire? Don’t get too confident. You know whatever pain you gave me I’d give back tenfold.” He snapped his fingers stripping her down to nothing. “Touch yourself. I want you to go with me.”
She released her grip and reached between her legs. He gripped his base, and traced his tip over her mouth, coating her swollen lips with pre-cum. She moaned
“You turned into a filthy thing. You like everything I do to you. Now suck me, and get us both off.” He thrust forward. “Such a pretty little mouth, all warm and wet, hugging me like you missed this dick more than you’ll ever admit.”
Her moan sent vibrations up his length. The wet sound of her fingers pounding into her pussy was music to his ears. Her dark head bobbed up and down. He lifted his hips, driving deep into the back of her throat. She took it like a champ. “I’m going to come and you better drink down every drop like a good girl.”
She moaned her agreement. Her body tensed. “Take me with you.” She hallowed her cheeks, sucking harder
His balls grew heavy. His eyes lowered to half mast. She cried out, and he let go, filling her mouth with all he had to give. She took him down, milking him. He stroked her hair, allowing himself the small show of affection as she rested with her head against his lap. She glanced up at him with heavily lidded eyes full of contentment. Something deep inside him gave way. The hardened shell that kept her at bay weakened more every day that passed
“I’m not done with you yet, Night. Get on the bed.” He put a stranglehold on the flickering emotions, intent on stomping it out
She got to her feet and crawled onto the bed, assuming the position. The sight of her body on the satin sheets sent blood rushing to his dick. He stroked his stiffening shaft, wondering if he’d ever be sated. He walked to the edge of the bed and caressed the soft swell of her ass
“How can one being be so perfect.” He gripped her hips and pulled her back to her edge. He pushed between her legs, rubbing against her slickness. “So wet, and ready. You want this is as much as I do, don’t you?”
“Yes.”
The whispered admission did funny things to him. What game is she playing? Always before she’d held a piece of herself back, but this was her raw, and open. Maybe this is what I’ve been waiting for. Tired of the commentary launching in his mind, he slid between her legs over her clit. “I’m going to remind you who you belong to tonight.” He nudged her pussy, sliding home in one hard thrust
She cried out rocking against him
Needing to be closer he pulled out moving her body, and joining her on the bed. He covered her body. Skin to skin he pushed inside her. Her body clutched him, welcoming him home like he was tailor-made to fit her. Closing his eyes he lost himself in the home he’d thought he thought bared to him forever

Lucien watched the sleeping form of his wife painted by the flickering flames of the fireplace. They’d been at this for months, and it wasn’t as satisfying as he thought it would be. The power trip got him high. He liked seeing her on her knees with her lips wrapped around his cock. The desire that burned bright in her brown orbs made him feel like he was on top of the world, and sick fuck that he was, he liked her resistance. She liked it, but she didn’t submit of her own free will. It was a sweet victory he’d long dreamed of. He needed her to fight. Her struggles assuaged the hurt he’d buried deep down for far too long.
He’d killed a man for less, but he could never do that to Night. She’d always be Night to him, no matter how long she’d lived under her assumed identity of Layla Spirit, bar owner of Purgatory. Clever, hiding under my nose the entire time. Tonight had been a game changer he hadn’t anticipated, and wasn’t prepared for. Disgusted he pushed away the sheets, willed himself into a pair of black jeans and a t-shirt and left the room
“Sire.”
“Judas.” The site of his second in command lurking in front of his home didn’t sit right. “What are you doing here?”
“I was coming to check in with you. You’ve been preoccupied of late.”
“Is there something that warranted checking? Are you suddenly having problems fulfilling your duties? Because I’m sure I can arrange for someone to take over if you need a respite.” Lucien narrowed his eyes
His eyes widened
Lucien growled. Flames burst up from the craggy black rock beneath them. The smell of brimstone permeated the air. Darkness spread around them swallowing the light. Flames formed in a circle around Judas. Judas’s dark eyes grew round. The scent of fear rolled off his body
“Don’t forget your place, Judas. I made you and I can tear you apart just as easily. Remember what it felt like to be in the pits?”
Judas shuddered
“Answer me,” Lucien said
“Yes, I remember,” Judas forced the words through gritted it teeth
“Perhaps a visit to them is necessary.” Lucien snapped his fingers. He took them to a cavernous hole, so deep nothing but darkness could be seen in the opening. The sound of screams pierces his ears, and the stench of rotted flesh burned his nostrils. He sent a hovering ball of fire over the darkness to illuminate the tables set up in the bowels of the Earth. “Take a good look,” Lucien said. The filleted bodies strapped to slabs looked like nothing more than wraiths. “I delivered you, dusted you off, breathed new life into you and trained you to take care of things for me. Don’t mistake that for an emotional attachment.” Lucien snapped his fingers and placed Judas on an empty slab. “We’ll see how you speak to me after a few days here.”
Lucien turned on his heels, ignoring the cries of anguish that rose up. This boldness didn’t bode well. What had he missed while he was wrapped up in his family drama? Unease settled over him. Time to make my rounds
Chapter Two
“This is going to be a disaster,” Heavenleigh muttered studying her reflection in the mirror
The past few months, her parents had been pushing the idea of a family down her throat. She didn’t buy her. Her mother hadn’t looked right since she’d “gotten back together” with daddy dearest. The light had gone out behind her eyes
“Why? They’re trying,” Yophiel said. “I thought that would please you.”
She studied his creased forehead in the mirror and smiled. Turning, she leaned back against the sink. “You still have much to learn about emotions. The strain between both of them makes me skittish. I don’t understand why they’re pretending.”
“She has much to answer for,” he said tilting his head to the side
“Yes, but this runs deeper than that. It’s like there’s an undercurrent there I can’t put my finger on.” She frowned. “I might be pissed at my mom, but I don’t want to see her hurt.”
“I believe that is inevitable. I may not know about many things. But I understand betrayal.” His voice lowered, and his eyes flashed golden
Entranced she remained silent
“Once trust is broken, it’s nearly impossible to fully restore, and what she took from him is the one thing he’d always wanted.”
“A child?” She wrinkled her nose. “Doesn’t sound like the dude from the black book.”
“No,” he shook his head, “a family to love and be loved by unconditionally. He saw Father’s creations as a slight against us, the Angels. He believed it was a sign of abandonment, and displeasure. An attempt to get it right the second time.”
“You seem to know a lot about how my father thinks. It’s scary.”
Yophiel frowned. “He was very vocal, and quite convincing. Enough to gather an army for war, I remember it all clearly. We all do, because we never want to see it repeated. Many were lost to us during those days.” A wealth of pain lay in his voice
She wrapped
her arms around his waist and rested her head on his chest. “I always forget how old you are. I’m used to teaching you the ways of the world. But in comparison to you, I’m not even an embryo. I’m sorry for the pain you must’ve endured. I can’t imagine being pitted against those I loved.”
“It was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, picking up a weapon and wielding it against my brothers and sisters. We are warriors, but we are not without feelings. I believe it broke something inside each us, and that is why we see so many fall.”
“Are there that many?” Heavenleigh asked.
“Quite a few over time, usually they leave in clusters, too afraid to go it alone. I never understood the desire, until you.”
She leaned back and studied her handsome protector. The other half of her soul, who’d, shared his grace to neutralize the demon blood running through her veins. “I love you, Angel man.”
“And I love you.” He leaned down and their lips connected
Tiny explosions burst behind her eyes. Electrical impulses ran through her body. Her muscles relaxed. Warmth and happiness flooded her. Their lips parted. She exhaled, cherishing the peace he brought to her life. “If we could bottle this, we’d be rich.”
“It only works because of our love. The connection between others would not be so…potent.”
She giggled at his wording. “I cause a powerful reaction in you, Angel man?”
“Yes, Minx, and since we need to be leaving to get to the party soon, I’d advise you against acting as a catalyst right now.”
“Oh, I love it when you talk smart to me.” She wagged her eyebrows, and he chuckled
“Come, we should be leaving for the bar.” He wrapped an arm around her shoulders
She let him lead her away from the bathroom with a huge sigh. People often said their family was dysfunctional, but they had no clue
They stepped outside, and Yophiel looked down at her. A hopeful expression resided in his blue eyes. “Can I drive?”
She laughed. No matter what form they took, men were men.
“Yes, put away those eyes. You can drive.” She dropped the keys in his hand and moved to the passenger seat. He opened the door for her with his powers and she smiled. “You spoil me.”
“I’m the only one who would dare.”
“It’s true,” Heavenleigh said. “You bring out the mushy teenager whose been dying to get out.” She climbed in and closed the door
Behind the wheel, he turned to her and narrowed his eyes.“Are you being a smart ass?”
She threw back her head and laughed until her belly hurt. “I love you, Angel man.”
“Hmmm.” He started the car, and pulled out of the driveway
“You know you love me just the way I am.”
“I feel it’s unwise to encourage you.”
His dry tone made her grin. “You learn fast Angel man.”
“I have to in order to keep up with you, my love.”
“You do a damn good job for a newbie.” She leaned over and patted his thigh
His playful grumble made her beam. If you’d told her six months ago she’d be in a serious relationship with a fallen Angel, she might’ve punched you in the face. Her entire life had been about neutrality and flying under the radar. Newly fallen Angels were practically a beacon begging to be taken advantage of. Wrapped in the Yophiel bubble, she escaped her black mood.
They pulled up to the club, and she allowed herself to be excited. It’d been a long time since they got everyone she cared about together. Over the years, she’d made a few good friends. Though, none ever knew her true identity. Technically neither did I. Slightly giddy she latched on to Yophiel’s arm as they came together in front of the car
“I bet I’m the only person who’s ever been this happy to be turning sixty-one.”
“I find your celebration of your birth to be charming. The last time they celebrated one in heaven, Jesus was being born.”
“Wait you were there?” she whispered
“Oh yes, we all came to witness that blessed event.”
Floored, she found herself speechless as they walked inside the bar
“Happy Birthday!”
The joyous roar made her grin
Her mother stood beside an awkward looking Lucien. Even dressed in dark denim and a Henley shirt, he looked at odds with the others around him. And they don’t even know who he is
“Thank you everyone for coming,” Heavenleigh said, waving to everyone
A man in dark she didn’t recognize stood beside her mother. Dressed head to toe in a pair of smart black slacks, black button up shirt, and shiny dark locks that fell over gem like eyes, he was a show stopper. Is this the reason mom left? Her father looked ambivalent. Since he doesn’t look like he wants to rip the dudes’ lungs out, I’ll say no
“Come here, there’s someone I’d like you to meet,” her mother said gesturing with her arm. As they moved toward the trip, the power coming off him alarmed her. What is he?
“I’m sorry this couldn’t happen sooner. Heavenleigh this is your Godfather, D. D, this is Heavenleigh.”
“Finally I meet the woman I’ve looked forward to spoiling and for almost a century.” He offered his hand, and they shook
“Hi?” She ran through a list of names in her head, but none fit. “What does the D stand for?”
“Death.”
She snorted and froze. “Wait, you’re serious?”
“I don’t waste time with untruths.”
Suddenly the immense power and cultured voice made sense. “My Godfather is Death? I have an Uncle Death?” She laughed at the insanity. Lucifer for a father, Death for a Godfather, her family was fast becoming an explosive cocktail. “Ooooh, death,” She sang
“Too much television I think,” Death said smirking
“Sorry. I’m...it’s an honor to meet you.”
“Oh, she’s adorable, Layla.”
Normally she’d send a snappy response flying, but he was Death. Not the type of being you want to dick with
“And smart,” Death aid
Her jaw dropped. “Can you—
“Read your mind? No, but I do read people well.”
Heavenleigh nodded mutely. Even for Purgatory, his presence was huge
“I’ll give you your gift now. I’m prone to disappear when I’m called away for work. Walk with me.” D glanced at Yophiel. “Be at peace, it’s nowhere near her time.”
Yophiel nodded and unwound his arm from her waist. She walked over to him and together they left the crowd behind them. When they stepped out onto the back patio, he pulled a small black box from his pocket. He held it in his palm. She studied the velvet box, half afraid to except it
“I’d never hurt you. What kind of godfather would that make me?” He rolled his eyes
Her hands shook as she accepted it
“Go ahead, open it.” He nodded his head
She opened it slowly and gasped. The black, heart shaped stone had a shimmer she’d never seen
“This will let me know where you are at all times. You’ve only to think of me and I’ll appear.”
She frowned, glancing up at him. “You think things are going to get ugly?”
“I think it’s’ inevitable, and I’m the type of man who plans in advance. Your mother chose me as your guardian if anything happens to her, for a reason.”
A look passed between them as he assumed his rightful position in her life
“You knew about me this whole time? It didn’t bother you to –” she trailed off, not wanting to call him a liar
“What? Lie? No, it was another secret I held until the time was right. I’ve had many, hold many, and will see more. It’s the nature of things. Unlike most, I do not fear your father. What could he do to me?”
She shook her head. The man has a point.
“ I want you to wear this at all time. What do you prefer? Necklace, ring, bracelet?”
“Ring please,” she said
“Done.
” He snapped his fingers and the heart shaped stone was set in a wide silver band. She slipped it on her middle finger and it shrank to spec
“Only you can remove this piece. If anyone else tries, I’ll know.”
“I wish I’d had you growing up.”
He laughed. “Yes, I can be quite protective of the ones I care about.” He paused. “It was nice to finally meet you, but I’m afraid duty calls. Death waits for no one you know.” He gave a smile and disappeared
“Bad ass,” she whispered. Still dazzled, she walked back to the bar where Yophiel stood talking to her mother. Lucien stood by her mother silently. His gaze swept the crowd. His hyper-vigilance made her uneasy. Does he know something?
He glanced up at her and laughed
“What?” she asked
“You’ve got the Death dazzle. Brother, I think you’re lucky she met you first,” Lucien snickered
“Be nice,” her mother whispered
Lucien scowled, but remained silent
It was the first interaction between them that seemed halfway normal. She narrowed her eyes studying them carefully. Her mother met her gaze and gave a small shake of her head. Making a mental note to corner her later, she turned her attention back to the party
“I’m going to go make my rounds. Stay here and keep Mom company?” Heavenleigh said
Yophiel nodded, and she stepped away to mingle with the small group of people
* * *
As they left the club, Yophiel couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that seeped in sometime during the party. Things were happening around him, and as much as he’d fallen for his ward, he never forgot his top priority was protecting her
“You were distracted tonight, Angel man.”
“You know social functions aren’t my strong point.”
“No, but something is off. There’s a stench in the air. We all felt it. It had Lucien on edge too.”
“This concerns me,” Yopihel shook his head, and opened the passenger door
