Cole laughed as he poured more coffee. ‘That might be true for most people,’ he said, ‘but most family members have known each other their entire lives. We’ve got seventeen years to catch up on. So what do you say?’
Michiko nodded her head, once. ‘I say “okay”. I’m in.’
‘Great,’ Cole said with a smile, toasting her with his coffee cup, ‘that’s really great.’
It had been a long time since Cole had had some family close to him, and – despite the stresses of the past few days, the damage to his body, his exhaustion both mental and physical – he could truly say that he couldn’t remember the last time he had been happier.
But still the voices nagged at him from the back of his mind, asking him one single, awkward, terrifying question . . .
