Ace wrapped his arms around Efia’s waist and rested his chin on top of her head. “She will be starting her new school shortly.”
“Yes,” Efia whispered. “She is excited about it.”
“They have a well-rounded program,” Ace said. “She will be exposed to the arts as well as science and technology.” Ace circled Efia’s growing bump with his fingers. “Good night, my son,” he whispered. “Before you know it, you will be joining your sister at school.”
Efia placed her hand over Ace’s hand. “Good night, Ace Davenport II. Your mommy, daddy, and sister, Yasmine can’t wait to welcome you into this world.”
Ace held Efia’s hand, and they walked from the room. When they entered the master bedroom, Efia reached for the remote control, turning the music system on. She lowered the volume. The vocals and instrumentals wafting from the Bose speakers surrounded them.
Ace pulled Efia into his arms. “That’s Abbey Lincoln’s Straight Ahead.”
Efia laughed. “You do know your music, don’t you?”
“What made you play this song?”
“I remembered you played one of her songs when we first met. I really like her voice, so I asked my dad for a recommendation.”
“You never cease to amaze me, Mrs. Kwateng-Davenport,” Ace said. “The title alone represents the perfect bookend and beginning of a new chapter in our lives.” Ace ran the pad of his thumb over Efia’s lips. “Let us go to bed, sweetheart, tomorrow our parents will descend on us. This will be the last peaceful night for a few days.”
Efia chuckled. “There will be no rest for the entire weekend, with Mom teaching Bonnie how to prepare Ghanaian dishes, and Dad and Steven making Ghanaian drinks. Our home will be lively, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
